Gary Ometer Appointed Vice President for Business Affairs and Finance

Gary Ometer is the new vice president for business affairs and finance at Hampden-Sydney College. Ometer previously served as chief financial officer of the Virginia College Savings Plan for 11 years. He is a certified public accountant (CPA) and chartered global management accountant. He received the 2013 Virginia CFO of the Year Award from Virginia Business Magazine in the small nonprofit/government agency category. He and his wife, Karin, reside in Henrico County with their shih tzus.

Ometer currently serves as chief financial officer for both VPM Media Corporation and the Virginia Foundation for Public Media in Richmond, Virginia, where he oversees the financial operations of these organizations. Before VPM, Ometer served as chief financial officer of the Virginia College Savings Plan for 11 years, where he was responsible for financial operations of the largest college savings plan in the country. From 2000 to 2006, he worked as an investment banker with BB&T Capital Markets (BB&TCM), serving localities and educational institutions in Virginia. In July 2022, Ometer was appointed chair of the Virginia College Building Authority by Governor Youngkin.

“We are thrilled to find a new vice president for business affairs and finance, who has both the financial management expertise and the breadth of experience that Gary is bringing to the College,” says Hampden-Sydney President Larry Stimpert. “We look forward to all that he will contribute.”

“I am honored to join such a venerable institution and look forward to working with President Stimpert, the board, staff, faculty, and students as the College moves into its next 250 years,” says Ometer.

Ometer holds a Bachelor of Science in business administration with concentrations in finance and accounting from The Ohio State University. Ometer is a certified public accountant (CPA) and chartered global management accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Virginia Society of CPAs. He received the 2013 Virginia CFO of the Year Award from Virginia Business Magazine in the small nonprofit/government agency category.

Ometer is also a member of the Controllers Executive Roundtable Steering Committee at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and the VCU School of Business Accounting Advisory Council. He has also served on the board of trustees for the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. He is a graduate of the Virginia Executive Institute and while at BB&TCM, he earned his license as a general securities representative (Series 7 and 63) through the NASD.

Ometer and his wife, Karin, reside in Henrico County with their shih tzus. He enjoys fly fishing, bicycling, gardening, and reading. Karin is an accomplished tennis player who is currently the varsity boys tennis coach and program leader at the Collegiate School in Henrico.
