Harborfest is officially underway, and the city of Oswego is buzzing with energy.

The annual four-day summer festival which dates back 36 years ago is known for its free concerts, thrilling rides, local vendors, and fireworks that light up the harbor. But for many in the community, it’s much more than a weekend of fun.

“It’s a good vibe,” said Harborfest attendee Joe McDermott. “It looks like everyone is having fun.”

Thousands are pouring into Breitbeck Park and the surrounding streets to enjoy everything from fried dough to live music. One popular performer this year? Country band Parmalee.

“We’ve been here in previous years and it’s awesome,” said Lisa Wright. “I want to see Parmalee.”

Local vendors say the crowds aren’t just good for the atmosphere they’re great for business.

“I mean, you see it. This is huge,” said Joe Vassallo, owner of the Saucy Sandwich food truck. “It’s one of the biggest festivals outside of the state fair.”

Mayor Robert Corradino says Harborfest brings a massive boost to Oswego’s economy and visibility.

“We only have about 17,000 people in the city of Oswego,” Corradino said. “And to host a four-day festival that could attract 100,000 to 150,000 people is a huge undertaking.”

For vendors like Tiffany Brice of Santillos the reward is more than just money.

“I get the chills,” Brice said. “That’s what we’re here for. We love to see people, we love to make them happy, and it makes me happy that the community supports the festival. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be here.”

Harborfest runs through Sunday night and with sunny skies and high spirits, both visitors and vendors are hoping the good times keep rolling.
