HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has cancelled a tsunami watch issued for the Hawaiian islands.
The alert came after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Russia.
Officials said the quake happened just before 6:30 a.m. local time.
According to the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, a tsunami watch “means a tsunami is possible, but the situation is still being evaluated.”
Residents were advised to prepare in the event of an emergency and monitor local TV and radio for updates.
