LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As students prepare to head back to class in exactly one month, a north valley high school will make their return after a tragic ending to last year.

In May, 18-year-old McKenzie Scott, an Arbor View High School senior who was days away from graduating, was hit and killed by an alleged drunk driver while in a crosswalk.

An email obtained by FOX5 from the Clark County School District reveals a City of Las Vegas employee notified the Clark County School District traffic email about potential dangers at the crosswalk where Scott was killed, months before her death.

“Could you please have your team follow up on complaints we’ve received about speeding in front of Arbor View High School? We are particularly concerned about the mid-block crosswalk on Buffalo Drive, North of Whispering Sands Drive, directly in front of the school, where there have been reports of near misses involving pedestrians,” the email reads.

In the next weeks, the same employee and a CCSD police officer emailed back and forth, discussing safety concerns on both Buffalo Dr., where Scott was killed, and Whispering Sands Dr., on the other side of the school.

Another email from April 2025 to CCSD’s traffic email raises safety concerns about the same crosswalk. This one is from a parent who says their child was hit by a car in the same crosswalk, on Buffalo Dr.

“This area in front of the school has become an unsafe and even hostile environment,” the email reads, in part. “Who is concerned for the children’s safety?”

In the days after Scott was killed, emails poured in from parents, both to CCSD and Arbor View administration.

An email from a parent to school district officials reads, in part, “a child died today. And it was the same crosswalk that my kid was hit 2 weeks ago. Makes me sick to my stomach.”

CCSD’s Deputy Superintendent responded to the email, writing, in part, “as shared by LVMPD, unfortunately, the events that transpired today were preventable as it was identified that the driver was impaired.”

Emails were also sent by CCSD staff members, according to FOX5’s records request, highlighting pedestrian safety concerns about other schools in the district.

“Most of our students walk or bike to school, and yet their safety is not being prioritized,” An email from an elementary school teacher reads in part. “We are pleading for help.”

Back at Arbor View High School, improvements are on the way to the crosswalk where Scott was hit and killed.

As FOX5 was first to report, Thursday construction crews began work on new overhead pedestrian-activated flashers crossing Buffalo Dr.

The city announced they’ll also be adding new signage and repainting crosswalks in the area.

The suspect accused of hitting Scott with his car outside Arbor View High School, 37-year-old Keenan Jackson, has pleaded not guilty to DUI and reckless driving charges. According to court documents, his blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit.

His trial is scheduled for October 20.

FOX5 reached out to CCSD and the City of Las Vegas about this correspondence. CCSD did not respond to the comment request as of Friday evening.
