Now that the Houlton Pioneer Times, The Star-Herald, the Aroostook Republican & News and the St. John Valley Times have become The County, I thought information on making reservations through the Presque Isle International Airport might be of interest to readers throughout the region.

I still get a lot of people asking how to make reservations, while others don’t have the correct information.

We’ve created a step-by-step guide online on how to book a flight through Presque Isle on jetBlue. The series of guides includes three situations the traveling public may encounter: 1) direct service between Presque Isle and the other city you are traveling to; 2) service between Boston and your destination through a partner airline; and 3) service to a destination not served by either JetBlue or a partner airline.

Brief summaries are below. For links to the detailed instructions, visit our Facebook site FlyPresqueIsle.

Direct service

JetBlue serves more than 75 non-stop destinations from Boston Logan and is Logan’s number one airline. JetBlue’s interactive route map on their website automatically displays every city you can fly to on jetBlue from Presque Isle.

Use the map to determine if they fly to an airport within easy driving distance of your final destination. For example, they don’t fly to Daytona Beach, but do serve Orlando, which is just over an hour drive.

People can also use the map to see if they can fly from a destination to Presque Isle.

Travelocity also allows them to type in their desired origination airport to Presque Isle, and will tell them the closest airport that has jetBlue service.

You can check flight availability for the dates you wish to travel from the interactive map. If you fly on jetBlue for your entire trip, all checked bags will be forwarded on to your next flight automatically.

Partner airlines

If jetBlue does not serve your final destination, one of their partners may. These partners offer additional options for destinations and may have shorter connection times. You can enjoy seamless booking and bag handling with these airline partners. You will not need to leave security in Boston to retrieve your bag that you checked in Presque Isle.

To check for flights with connections on airline partners, go to www.jetblue.com. Enter your from and to city pair and when you would like to depart and return. If an airline partners does not serve the exact airport you wish to fly to, consider flying to a larger city within easy driving distance.

You can also check the route maps of jetBlue’s airline partners. A list of their airline partners can be found at www.jetblue.com/airline-partners.

Different destinations

If jetBlue or partners do not serve an airport near your destination, you can do a self-transfer. A self-transfer is a flight arrangement that involves booking two or more flights from different airlines to reach your destination, and then transferring between them yourself.

This is simply done by booking a round trip-ticket on jetBlue between Presque Isle and Boston and then a second round-trip ticket on another airline from Boston to your final destination. You will transfer your bags and check in for both airlines yourself.

A more detailed discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of self-transfers can be found at simpleflying.com/a-guide-to-unprotected-connections-the-benefits-risks/ and airhelp.com/en/blog/what-are-your-rights-for-self-connecting-flights.

Boston has a large variety of self-transfer options. When selecting the second airline to book on, you should consider the location of the gates of that second airline. The gates for every airline in Boston except Delta and Westjet can be reached inside security from any jetBlue gate. Therefore, if you are just taking a carry-on bag, you can walk directly from your jetBlue gate to the gate for your connecting flight.

I also recommend checking in online 24 hours prior to your departure so you have your boarding pass prior to arriving at the connecting gate in Boston. If you have a checked bag and you are doing a self-transfer, you will have to go outside security and retrieve your checked bag. The bag will need to be rechecked with the airline that you are using for the connecting flight.
