PERRYSBURG, Ohio — Hull Prairie Intermediate School has been awarded a national Green Flag by the National Wildlife Federation for its student-led environmental efforts, joining a select group of schools recognized for outstanding sustainability initiatives.
The Green Flag is the highest honor in the NWF’s EcoSchools USA program, which encourages schools to take action on sustainability and environmental education. At HPI, students have taken that mission to heart through projects ranging from composting and gardening to river cleanups and wildlife conservation, according to an announcement from Perrysburg Schools.
Classroom-based activities such as recycling, composting and a trout habitat project helped build momentum, while the school’s Environmental Club led a hands-on cleanup along the Maumee River this spring. That project, supported by a grant from the NWF’s EcoGreen program, gave students a chance to directly apply their STEM education to real-world environmental impact.
“I am so proud of our students for their leadership and dedication to making a difference,” said Amy Boros, science teacher and advisor for the Environmental Club at HPI. “Through their hard work, they have helped build a more sustainable future for our school and community.”
Since launching in 2009, the EcoSchools USA program has engaged more than 6,000 schools nationwide in sustainability-focused learning and action.
