Miami roads flood after tropical moisture shatters daily rain record
Miami tallied 4.35 inches of rain on Monday, breaking the city’s daily record for May 12 of 2.72 inches, set in 1943. Monday also marked Miami’s rainiest May day since 2020. A Level 3 out of 4 flash flood risk was issued for most of South Florida on Monday. Rain will help improve Florida’s ongoing drought as the state transitions from its dry season into the wetter months.. Every major weather station in the Florida Peninsula was running between 2 and 9 inches below average for the year.
The system responsible for the rounds of rain is now offshore, but deep tropical moisture from the Gulf remains in place and could bring scattered showers to the Sunshine State through Tuesday afternoon.

A Level 3 out of 4 flash flood risk was issued for most of South Florida on Monday, as heavy rain swamped the area.
Road flooding was observed as far west and north as Interstate 75 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Amid the showers and thunderstorms, a waterspout was spotted forming near Leesburg, Florida, around sunset.
That comes after severe storms damaged parts of the Florida Panhandle over the weekend.
As showers depart on Tuesday afternoon, drier air will return for the next several days.

Rain will help ease Florida drought conditions
This rain will help improve Florida’s ongoing drought as the state transitions from its dry season into the wetter months.
According to the FOX Forecast Center, every major weather station in the Florida Peninsula was running between 2 and 9 inches below average for the year as of Monday.
Forecasters expect that enough moisture has fallen in the past three days to put a significant dent in those ongoing rain deficits.

The National Weather Service found EF-2 damage from a tornado in Bridgeton, near the airport. At least 12 people were killed by severe storms in Missouri, with at least one of those deaths coming from St. Louis County.
Video from St. Louis Lambert International Airport shows an airplane taking off as the area was under a Tornado Warning.
As lightning illuminates the sky, a tornado can be seen spinning in the background as the airplane gains altitude.
The National Weather Service in St. Louis conducted surveys throughout the weekend and found EF-2 damage from a tornado in Bridgeton, located near the airport.
At least 12 people were killed by severe storms in Missouri, with at least one of those deaths coming from St. Louis County.

An active stretch of severe weather is expected to develop late this week and continue into the Easter weekend. The threats include damaging winds, large hail and potentially tornadoes. There is the potential for more intense storms, including tornadoes over regions that have been hit very hard over the past month, including portions of the southern Plains, lower and mid- Mississippi Valley andMid-South region. A significant late-season snowstorm is expected. to bring high winds and as much as 1-2 feet of snow to the Rockies from Wednesday night through Saturday. Renewed severe storms target Midwest, South threatening Easter travel for millions this weekend
An active stretch of severe weather is expected to develop late this week and continue into the Easter weekend, with the most significant threats likely on Friday and over the weekend.
There’s a chance for very isolated thunderstorms over Nebraska and Kansas on Wednesday evening. By Thursday morning, storms could produce large hail in parts of Nebraska, northern Missouri and Iowa.
The most significant severe weather threat is expected to develop on Friday, covering an area stretching from the southern Plains all the way into the Great Lakes region. Numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop Friday afternoon and evening, impacting those celebrating Good Friday. The threats include damaging winds, large hail and potentially tornadoes.
While the details of how storms will impact Saturday and Easter Sunday are still coming together, there is the potential for more intense storms, including tornadoes over regions that have been hit very hard over the past month, including portions of the southern Plains, lower and mid- Mississippi Valley and mid-South region.

Weather whiplash to bring late-season snow to Rockies
A significant late-season snowstorm is expected to bring high winds and as much as 1-2 feet of snow to the Rockies from Wednesday night through Saturday.
Ahead of the winter weather, temperatures may climb to record levels in Colorado, with highs in the 70s to lower 80s.
Winter Storm Watches and Winter Weather Advisories are in place for Montana, Wyoming and Utah.

Dangerous fire weather conditions expected across Southwest
Winds will pick up, and humidity levels will drop across parts of the Southwest beginning Wednesday, bringing a critical fire weather threat, conducive to the rapid spread of any wildfires that are sparked.
Fire Weather Watches and Warnings are up posted for more than 10 million people.
New Mexico could see wind gusts of up to 60 mph. Albuquerque and Santa Fe will be in an area of extreme fire weather conditions on Thursday before winds begin to subside Friday and into Saturday.

Watch: Terrified hiker holds death grip in dramatic nail-biting cliffside rescue in California
A stranded and terrified hiker was safely rescued by first responders in California after she slipped down a cliffside and was forced to hold on for dear life to prevent herself from tumbling to the ground below.
The nail-biting rescue was captured on video by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit on April 13 in the Whitewater area along the Pacific Crest Trail south of San Bernardino County.

Erick is expected to approach the coast of southern Mexico by Wednesday night and move inland or be near the coast on Thursday, according to the NHC. The NHC’s forecast of 8-16 inches of rain will fall close to the coast. Localized pockets of up to 20 inches ofRain are possible in the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero.
Tropical Storm Erick is strengthening in the Eastern Pacific Ocean some 180 miles south-southeast of Puerto Angel, Mexico, and is expected to rapidly intensify into a hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
The NHC has recorded maximum sustained winds of 65 mph within Erick, which formed early Tuesday morning.
Erick is the fifth named storm of this year’s Eastern Pacific hurricane season, and it could be the first named storm in either the Atlantic or Eastern Pacific basins to make landfall.

Erick forecast to rapidly intensify before landfall
The NHC said Tuesday that Erick is expected to rapidly intensify before making landfall. Rapid intensification occurs when a tropical cyclone’s maximum sustained winds increase by at least 35 mph within 24 hours .
Erick could reach major hurricane strength if it intensifies faster than current forecasts show. A major hurricane is defined as a Category 3, 4 or 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
It is expected to approach the coast of southern Mexico by Wednesday night and move inland or be near the coast on Thursday, according to the NHC.

Erick could be first named storm of 2025 to make landfall in either Eastern Pacific or Atlantic
Forecasters said Erick will bring heavy rain to Central America and southeastern Mexico this week, and it will likely become the first storm in either the Eastern Pacific or the Atlantic to make landfall this year.
According to the FOX Forecast Center, landfall could happen in Mexico. The NHC’s forecast of 8-16 inches of rain will fall close to the coast. Localized pockets of up to 20 inches of rain are possible in the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo took to X to warn residents to stay tuned to the latest conditions and alerts ahead of the storm making landfall in Mexico.
The NHC also warned that storm surge could produce life-threatening coastal flooding, swells and rip currents from Erick may arrive by Wednesday evening.

SpaceX launches megarocket from South Texas, loses control during mid-mission
SpaceX lost control of the rocket halfway through the test mission. The launch occurred under mostly clear skies and the spacecraft was able to reach orbital altitude. The Starship spacecraft is being developed with the long-term goal of carrying astronauts to the Moon and, potentially, Mars. The next mission, Artemis II, is expected to be a crewed flight, but it also will not involve SpaceX’s Starship, which likely will not be used until at least Artemis III in 2022. The Artemis program aims to return humans to the lunar surface by 2027, marking the first crewed Moon mission since Apollo 17 in December 1972. The first Artemis mission launched in November 2022 using a Boeing Space Launch System rocket and the Orion spacecraft.
The launch occurred under mostly clear skies and the spacecraft was able to reach orbital altitude – a stark contrast to previous missions this year, which ended in explosions over the southwest Atlantic.
The Federal Aviation Administration gave the go-ahead for the Elon Musk-led company to proceed with the launch after determining that SpaceX had adequately addressed the causes of the March mishap, which had forced airplanes to scramble to avoid collisions with falling debris.
SpaceX had previously attributed the failure of the March test to the loss of multiple Raptor engines, which caused the rocket to lose control less than 10 minutes into the flight.
SPACEX GIVEN FEDERAL APPROVAL TO RESUME STARSHIP MEGAROCKET TEST LAUNCH AFTER SPECTACULAR EXPLOSION
Although Tuesday’s test flight lasted approximately an hour, it did not achieve all of its mission goals.
Less than 20 minutes into the mission, the Starship appeared unable to deploy dummy Starlink satellites and around 30 minutes in, fuel leaks were reported aboard the spacecraft.
Shortly after, the rocket appeared to enter an uncontrolled spin and was expected to crash harmlessly into the Indian Ocean.
Mission control had planned to observe the rocket’s heat shield during its reentry phase, but due to the mid-flight issues, they were unsuccessful in completing all of Tuesday’s planned milestones.
Unlike several previous missions that caused debris to rain down over active flight zones, SpaceX said the rocket was on a trajectory to land in a designated area that had been alerted prior to the mission.
Before the launch, the FAA said it was in contact with its counterparts in the United Kingdom, Bahamas, Mexico, Cuba and the Turks & Caicos Islands to monitor any long-range impacts from launches.
As of Tuesday evening, it was unclear whether the agency would initiate another lengthy investigation into the latest mishap.
“”Starship made it to the scheduled ship engine cutoff, so big improvement over last flight! Also, no significant loss of heat shield tiles during ascent. Leaks caused loss of main tank pressure during the coast and re-entry phase. Lot of good data to review,” Musk stated after the failure.
SPACEX STARSHIP EXPLOSION CAUSES SCRAMBLED FLIGHTS AS DEBRIS RAINS DOWN OVER ATLANTIC
The Starship spacecraft is being developed with the long-term goal of carrying astronauts to the Moon and, potentially, Mars, but SpaceX has not publicly disclosed a timeline for when the rocket will be certified for human space travel.
Several previous test flights have encountered challenges, leading to uncertainty about the objectives of NASA’s Artemis program.
The Artemis program aims to return humans to the lunar surface by 2027, marking the first crewed Moon mission since Apollo 17 in December 1972.
The first Artemis mission launched in November 2022 using a Boeing Space Launch System rocket and the Orion spacecraft.
The next mission, Artemis II, is expected to be a crewed flight, but it also will not involve SpaceX’s Starship, which likely will not be used until at least Artemis III.
Depending on the outcome of any future investigation, the next Starship launch is unlikely to occur before mid-summer.
