PORT CLINTON – CheeseHaven, the iconic cheese store in Port Clinton, has added their own wines to the huge wine, cheese and candy selection.

CheeseHaven is known for the big yellow storefront sign on East Harbor Road and SE Catawba Road advertising 125 cheeses, but the number of cheeses is no longer accurate. There are now many more cheeses available.

“We are well over 250 cheeses now. We don’t have all of them in at one time. We rotate them out,” Owner Lisa Geisheimer said. “We just added four new flavors of gouda this year! We have customers come in and make requests for unusual things, and we go look for it and try to bring it in.”

Geisheimer owns the store with her husband, Tom.

She said that they are constantly bringing in new items, shifting out others, and bringing back the most popular foods.

“We have local wines too! We have Heineman’s wine, which is on the island in Put-in-Bay. It’s one of the oldest wineries on the bay. I think it’s on its fifth generation. We carry a lot of their wines and sell a lot of their wines, but we also have Lonz, and we have Maumee,” Geisheimer said. “We also started this year our own wine. We started out with two: a white Catawba and a pink Catawba, which has our logo on it with Pete, the mouse.”

CheeseHaven has been open since 1949, when 16-year-old Richard “Pops” Brassel took over the family produce stand after his father passed away. The story goes that a truck driver, delivering produce, suggested he get into selling cheese because it had a longer shelf life and sold faster. The next week, he dropped off a 250-pound wheel of Swiss cheese. The funny thing about some cheese is that it goes up in value as it ages.

Pops decided to learn the cheese business. He was completely self-taught and grew the company to the point that it is known worldwide.

“My favorite part about summer is seeing all the people come in and hearing all the stories,” Geisheimer said. “People come in, and they were raised in the area or came to vacation in the area, and they tell me amazing stories about this place, and they are happy that it is still here.”

She said that their most popular items are their cheddar spread and the horseradish spread, and the most popular cheeses are the smoked cheddar and smoked Swiss.

“Most of our customers are vacationers. They used to spend their summers here on the lake, and now they are bringing back their grandkids, which is really exciting,” Geisheimer said.

She said that this season has started off a little slowly, but attributes it to the cooler weather.

“I’ve learned that it’s all weather dependent. Because the weather is a little cool, people tend to wait to open up their boats or cabins, but always, after school lets out, people start traveling,” Geisheimer said.

CheeseHaven is open 7 days a week in-season, from late April through October, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It’s located at 2920 E. Harbor Road in Port Clinton.
