The S&P 500 fell Monday, ending a nine-day rally as investors monitored the latest developments on global trade.
The broad-market index shed 0.64% to close at 5,650.38, while the Nasdaq Composite dipped 0.74% to end at 17,844.24. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 98.60 points, or 0.24%, to settle at 41,218.83. The S&P 500 came into the session riding a nine-day winning streak, its longest since 2004.
At its lows, the Dow fell as much as 253.99 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq lost around 1% each before curtailing their losses. Data released on Monday from the Institute for Supply Management reflected stronger-than-expected service sector activity in April, even as company executives reported rising concerns about tariffs.
Sentiment also improved after Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that India has proposed zero tariffs on steel, auto components and pharmaceuticals on a reciprocal basis and up to a certain amount of imports.
That said, investors remain uncertain about the timeline of tariff agreements between the U.S. and other countries.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC on Monday that “we’re very close to some deals,” echoing comments from Trump on Sunday that accords could come as early as this week.
Trump told reporters on Sunday that “we’re negotiating with many countries, but at the end of this, I’ll set my own deals — because I set the deal, they don’t set the deal.” Trump added that he has no plans to talk to Chinese President Xi Jinping, dashing hopes that progress is being made to ease U.S.-China trade tensions.
Trump on Sunday also authorized relevant government agencies to begin imposing a 100% tariff on films produced abroad, calling efforts from other nations to attract film productions a “national security threat.” It remains unclear if the levies would impact movies shown in theaters or movies on streaming services. Shares of Netflix dropped nearly 2%, and Paramount lost more than 1% on Monday.
“I am worried, I was hoping trade deals would be announced by now. They’re not. I don’t think the impact has hit us yet,” said Jeremy Siegel, finance professor at University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and Wisdom Tree chief economist.
Wall Street is looking ahead to the Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting beginning on Tuesday, with a rate decision expected Wednesday. Fed funds futures trading points to just a 4.4% chance of a rate cut, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool. Still, traders are keeping a close eye on any commentary from the central bank or Fed Chair Jerome Powell on the outlook for the economy amid heightened uncertainty stemming from the trade war.
Trump tariffs Highlights: Trump warns of ‘transition cost’ from tariffs, says he would love to make a trade deal with China
All three major U.S. stock indexes suffered steep losses, forfeiting much of the previous session’s gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1,048 points, or 2.6%, with a little less than an hour remaining in trading. The S&P 500 was down 3.4% in late trading.
President Donald Trump claimed victory over Europe in the U.S. tariffs war but acknowledged a “cost” to his surging trade offensive against superpower rival China as markets plunged again on Thursday (April 10, 2025).
Trump sought a victory lap at a White House cabinet meeting, saying the European Union had backed off from imposing retaliatory tariffs because of his tough stance on China.
Trump also acknowledged “a transition cost and transition problems,” but dismissed global market turmoil. “In the end it’s going to be a beautiful thing.”
The White House clarified that levies on Chinese imports are now at a staggering total of 145%- not the previously reported 125%.
Wall Street stocks tumbled on mounting worries over the economic impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s multi-front tariff war.
All three major U.S. stock indexes suffered steep losses, forfeiting much of the previous session’s gains as growing concerns over the escalating Washington-Beijing trade face-off dampened optimism over upbeat economic data and U.S.-Europe trade negotiations.
The S&P 500 was down 3.4% in late trading, slicing into Wednesday’s surge of 9.5% following Trump’s decision to pause many of his tariffs worldwide. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1,048 points, or 2.6%, with a little less than an hour remaining in trading, and the Nasdaq composite was 4.3% lower.

Share Market Highlights 7 April 2025: Sensex crashes 2,226 points, Nifty sinks 742 as tariff turmoil roils global markets
From the current level (Nifty was around 23200) expected 5-6% correction (around 22,000); that’s because of PE contraction. If EPS contraction starts then more than 10% correction in Nifty and a below (or around) 20,000 level is triggered. GDP growth, inflation, core sector growth, and high-frequency indicators (HFIs) suggest that markets may have bottomed out.
Uncertainty is the key word here. Don’t assume that you know…if we don’t know we don’t know … .so we don’t know what comes next and in which area from the US administration (as of now). Currently we are living in an uncertain world, hence traditional technical and fundamental parameters may not be the right model to look at current times unless the word uncertainty is removed from the investors mind.
Am I comfortable with the valuations at these levels; the answer is YES. Would I take a bet right now, the answer is NO as the uncertainty is really very high. My systematic investment would continue but the lump sum investment would wait. I will get better opportunities in this volatile time.
From the current level (Nifty was around 23200) expected 5-6% correction (around 22,000); that’s because of PE contraction. If EPS contraction starts then more than 10% correction in Nifty and a below (or around) 20,000 level is triggered so watch this and upcoming earnings carefully. In a challenging environment, we have observed earnings cut by up to 30% and till date we have seen earnings cut by 7%/ 2% for CY25 and CY26 (Bloomberg) from Sep-24.
Where would you hide now – During the UNCERTAIN periods, even the stocks with strong earnings couldn’t stop falling. GDP growth, inflation, core sector growth, and high-frequency indicators (HFIs) suggest that markets may have bottomed out based on valuations, technicals, and fundamentals. However, given the uncertainty surrounding us, we should adopt a cautiously optimistic stance.
India’s long term story is intact: India’s GDP growth is estimated at 6.5% for FY25. The debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to decline by at least 5.1 percentage points from 2024-25 to 2030-31. At some point in time, India could be a place to hide for FPIs.
