Investigation underway after gas leak triggers explosion, destroys Herriman businesses
A ruptured gas line triggered a powerful explosion and massive fire in Herriman. Police said a car involved in a three-vehicle collision slammed into the building, setting off a gas leak. Evacuations were ordered for nearby homes, and westbound lanes of 13400 South were closed overnight. The gas leak was contained, and the evacuation order was lifted by 1:05 a.m. Sunday.

All westbound lane closures were lifted by 9:30 a.m., and the roadway was fully reopened. The damaged property remains fenced off and off-limits, and the adjacent sidewalk is closed. Residents have been advised to avoid the area.
The strip mall also houses Herriman City’s water pump facility, which officials say was not damaged. The city’s water supply was not affected.

Three people were hospitalized after the crash, including the driver and passenger who were pulled from the burning car by bystanders just moments before it became fully engulfed, police said. A third person was also injured.
The explosion and fire destroyed the business and caused significant damage to two other structures. More than 60 firefighters from Unified Fire Authority, South Jordan, West Jordan, West Valley City, Sandy, and Draper responded to fight the blaze. No firefighters or police officers were injured.
Police said that vehicle owners who left their cars at the scene can retrieve them by calling Herriman Police at 801-840-4000.
