In an official statement, the Home Secretary Yvette Cooper says:

“I have decided to proscribe Palestine Action under section 3 of the Terrorism Act 2000. A draft proscription order will be laid in Parliament on Monday 30 June. If passed, it will make it illegal to be a member of, or invite support for, Palestine Action.”

It goes on to say that “the disgraceful attack on Brize Norton in the early hours of the morning on Friday 20 June is the latest in a long history of unacceptable criminal damage committed by Palestine Action. The UK’s defence enterprise is vital to the nation’s national security and this Government will not tolerate those that put that security at risk. Counter Terrorism Policing are leading the criminal investigation into this attack. It is important that this process is free from interference and the police are allowed to carry out their important work gathering evidence and working to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Since its inception in 2020, Palestine Action has orchestrated a nationwide campaign of direct criminal action against businesses and institutions, including key national infrastructure and defence firms that provide services and supplies to support Ukraine, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), “Five Eyes” allies and the UK defence enterprise. Its activity has increased in frequency and severity since the start of 2024 and its methods have become more aggressive, with its members demonstrating a willingness to use violence. Palestine Action has also broadened its targets from the defence industry to include financial firms, charities, universities and government buildings. Its activities meet the threshold set out in the statutory tests established under the Terrorism Act 2000. This has been assessed through a robust evidence-based process, by a wide range of experts from across government, the police and the Security Services.”

The statement described millions of pounds worth of property damage, and says that proscription will “enable law enforcement to effectively disrupt the escalating actions of this serious group. Only last month Palestine Action claimed responsibility for an attack against a Jewish-owned business in North London, where the glass-front of the building was smashed and the building and floor defaced with red-paint including the slogan “drop Elbit”. Such incidents do not represent legitimate or peaceful protest. Regardless of whether this incident itself amounts to terrorism, such activity is clearly intimidatory and unacceptable. It is one that has been repeated many times by this organisation at sites the length and breadth of the UK.”

Live updates: Iran-Israel conflict: Trump rebukes both sides hours after ceasefire

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney speaks to CNN’S Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview on Tuesday. “The military action was also a diplomatic move by Iran. We never welcome, obviously, hostilities and reactions, but it was proportionate, it was de-escalatory, it appears to have been previewed,” he said. Carney said it remains to be seen if the ceasefire between Iran and Israel could lead to something bigger.

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney speaks to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview on Tuesday. CNN

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview that Tehran’s decision to launch a “de-escalatory” retaliation against the United States after it struck Iranian nuclear sites created a window for diplomacy.

“The military action was also a diplomatic move by Iran. We never welcome, obviously, hostilities and reactions, but it was proportionate, it was de-escalatory, it appears to have been previewed,” he said.

Carney said that he believed the ceasefire between Israel and Iran that was announced by US President Donald Trump on Monday was made possible because Tehran’s position has been weakened.

“The position of Iran has been substantially downgraded, with respect to airspace and potentially significantly with respect to their nuclear capabilities, or the development of their nuclear capabilities, and that’s created a window for the ceasefire,” he told Amanpour.

“We’ll see how it holds,” he added.

Carney told Amanpour it remains to be seen if the ceasefire between Iran and Israel could lead to something bigger.

“It gives an opening for diplomacy, that’s the right way to put it, and the question is does that diplomacy really get traction and move to ending this risk of nuclear proliferation and does it lead to a broader ceasefire in the Middle East including in Gaza,” he said.

More on Iran’s nuclear program: Asked by Amanpour for his view on the US intelligence assessment that Iran was not actively pursuing a nuclear weapon, Carney said: “The reaction of Iran and some of its allies has revealed the nefarious nature of much of its nuclear program. It was a fiction that they perpetrated that this was only for peaceful means.”

He said that the degree to which Iran was enriching uranium and the fact that it was hiding its facilities were telling signs of its real intentions.

What we know about the Iran-Israel ceasefire

Donald Trump has warned Israel against launching further attacks on Iran, hours after he said a ceasefire between the two sides had taken effect. The US president used an expletive as he criticised both sides, after each accused the other of breaking the US and Qatar-brokered truce. It came after Israel said Iran had violated the deal and vowed to respond with “powerful strikes”. Iran denied firing any missiles towards Israel and the country’s top security body has vowed to respond to any further Israeli aggression. Here’s what we know so far. Follow the latest updates on our live page

When did the ceasefire take effect?

Just after 05:00 GMT on Tuesday, Trump announced that the ceasefire had taken effect. “Please do not violate it!” he urged both sides in a post on his Truth Social platform. The Israeli government said it had agreed to the US ceasefire proposal just after 06:00 GMT on Tuesday, after Iran indicated that it would stop attacking if Israel did the same. However, hours later, Israel accused Iran of launching further attacks on its territory. Trump first said that a truce had been “fully agreed” in a post shortly after 22:00 GMT on Monday, which he said would bring an end to what he called “the 12 day war”. It came after Iran launched missiles at a US base in Qatar on Monday, in what it said was a retaliation for American strikes against its nuclear sites over the weekend.

What has Trump said?

In a post on Truth Social, Trump urged Israel – “do not drop those bombs” on Iran. Speaking to reporters outside the White House shortly afterwards, Trump said he was “not happy” with Israel. “There was one rocket that I guess was fired overboard after the time limit and now Israel is going out. These guys [have] got to calm down,” he said. In an angry outburst he said the two countries didn’t know what they were doing. In a later post, he said: “The ceasefire is in effect.”

How have Iran and Israel responded?

Two hours after Israel said it had agreed to the truce, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had identified missiles launched from Iran. Katz accused Iran of a “complete violation” of the terms, adding that he had instructed the military to “continue the intense activity of attacking Tehran to thwart regime targets and terrorist infrastructures”. The Iranian military denied it had fired missiles after the ceasefire had taken effect. Later, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said that “in the final moments before the ceasefire was imposed on the enemy”, it had struck “military and logistical centres” in Israel. The IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency reported Israel had launched “a three-phase” military strike on its territory after the ceasefire. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council earlier said Israeli attacks would be “met with a decisive, firm, and timely response by Iran”.

Has the ceasefire been broken?

The Israeli prime minister’s office accused Iran of launching missiles toward its territory after the truce came into force on Tuesday, which Iran has denied. It added that the Israeli military responded by striking a “radar array near Tehran”. Before the truce began, Iran and Israel exchanged heavy fire. The IDF said several rounds of strikes hit the country on Monday night into Tuesday. Rescue workers said four people were killed and 22 injured in the town of Beersheba. At the time, Iranian state media said Iran had launched “a last round of missiles” against Israel. Overnight, Iranian state TV reported that the capital, Tehran, endured some of its most intense air defence clashes since the war broke out on 13 June, and residents told BBC Persian they heard loud explosions. The IDF said it struck and destroyed missile launchers in western Iran that it said were “ready to be fired at Israeli territory”. Tehran said another nuclear scientist was killed before the agreement took force.

Why did Israel attack Iran?

Israel attacked nuclear and military sites in Iran on Friday 13 June, claiming Iran was close to building a nuclear weapon. Israel said it had no choice but to bomb Iran after diplomatic talks aimed at curbing the country’s nuclear programme stalled. The Israeli offensive took place amid growing international concern that Iran has increased its production of enriched uranium – a key component in the making of nuclear weapons. However, there is no international consensus on how close Iran has come to building its own nuclear weapons. In the following days, Israel targeted Iranian infrastructure it said could be used for “nuclear weapons development”. The US later joined the strikes, dropping its so-called bunker buster bombs on the Fordo site, a nuclear enrichment facility buried deep below a mountain outside Tehran. In an update on Tuesday, a spokesman for Iran’s health ministry said 610 people had been killed and 4,746 injured in Israeli strikes since the conflict began. According to Israel’s health ministry, four people were killed on Tuesday, bringing the death toll since 13 June to 28.

Iran says it will not violate ceasefire deal unless Israel does

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday a ceasefire between Israel and Iran was now in place and asked both sides not to violate it. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had agreed to Trump’s ceasefire proposal, declaring that Israel had achieved its goal of removing Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile threat. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tuesday that his country was not seeking nuclear weapons but will continue to defend its “legitimate rights” as a ceasefire took hold with Israel. A loud explosion was heard in Damascus on Tuesday, echoing across the Syrian capital, AFP correspondents reported. Life returns to Tehran, but residents wary ceasefire won’t hold, after nearly two weeks of war. “I don’t think it is sustainable,” said Ahmad Barqi, 75, a 75-year-old electronics vendor of a Tehran bazaar. “It seems Israel is violating the truce,” said Alireza Jahangiri, another merchant, who heard Israel had carried out three rounds of strikes after the ceasefire was announced.

Tehran was far from its usual hustle and bustle on Tuesday, but life was regaining some colour despite concerns from residents that a tentative ceasefire between Iran and Israel may not hold, after nearly two weeks of war.

In Tajrish bazaar in north Tehran, everyone had their own opinion on whether the end to the fighting announced by US President Donald Trump would last.

“I don’t think it is sustainable,” said Ahmad Barqi, a 75-year-old vendor of electronics. “We would like a ceasefire… but they don’t implement it, they don’t keep to their promises,” he said, referring to the Israelis.

Israel says it hit Iranian radar, but refrained from other strikes after Trump call

Israel acknowledged striking a radar installation near Tehran hours after the start of a ceasefire on Tuesday, in retaliation for Iranian missile launches, but said it had refrained from further attacks beyond that after US President Donald Trump spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The prime minister’s office acknowledged the strike in a statement after Trump publicly expressed frustration that Israel had launched strikes on Iran after the ceasefire agreement was reached but before it took effect.

Tehran has rejected accusations that it breached the truce, which was meant to start at 7am Israeli time (0400 GMT), and instead said Israel had continued its attacks on Iran for an hour and a half after the ceasefire came into effect.

Netanyahu’s office said that Israel had carried out a strike in Tehran targeting Iranian security forces at 3am (midnight GMT), four hours before the ceasefire was due to start.

Trump says Iran-Israel truce holds after berating both countries

US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that a ceasefire between Iran and Israel was holding, shortly after he lashed out at both countries and cursed as he accused them of violating the truce.

In a fast-moving series of declarations, the 79-year-old Republican, who was on his way to attend a NATO summit in The Hague, posted on his Truth Social app that “the Ceasefire is in effect!”

“ISRAEL is not going to attack Iran. All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly ‘Plane Wave’ to Iran. Nobody will be hurt,” Trump wrote.

Minutes earlier, he had castigated Iran and also close US ally Israel for violating a ceasefire he had originally announced late Monday.

The two countries have been “fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f*** they’re doing, do you understand that?” the president told reporters at the White House.

Iran violated the ceasefire, “but Israel violated it too,” Trump told reporters on the White House’s South Lawn as he departed for the NATO summit.

“So I’m not happy with them. I’m not happy with Iran either. But I’m really unhappy if Israel is going out this morning.”

“I’ve got to get Israel to calm down,” he said. “Israel, as soon as we made the deal, they came out and dropped a load of bombs the likes of which I’ve never seen before.”

If it holds, the truce would be a big political win for Trump in the wake of his risky decision to send US bombers over the weekend to attack three nuclear facilities in Iran that Israel and the United States say were being used to build an atomic bomb in secret.

The US leader had said the truce would be a phased 24-hour process beginning at around 0400 GMT Tuesday, with Iran unilaterally halting all operations first. He said Israel would follow suit 12 hours later.

New Israeli strikes reported by media despite Trump’s command to stop

Iranian and Israeli media reported new Israeli airstrikes on Iran on Tuesday, despite US President Donald Trump having said Israel had called them off at his command to preserve an hours-old ceasefire.

Two explosions were heard in the capital, the judiciary news outlet Mizan reported. Israeli army radio said Israel had struck an Iranian radar site near Tehran.

The strikes took place minutes after Trump said Israel had called off its attack in response to his command.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz had said earlier on Tuesday that he had ordered the military to mount new strikes on targets in Tehran in response to what he said were Iranian missiles fired in a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire.

Iran denied launching any missiles and said Israel’s attacks had continued for an hour and a half beyond the time the ceasefire was meant to start.

US willing to negotiate on Iran nuclear energy: Rubio

The United States would allow Iran to operate nuclear power plants but not enrich its own fuel, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday, after a wave of American strikes aimed to wipe out Iran’s nuclear program.

“The Iranian regime should wake up and say ‘OK, if we really want nuclear energy in our country, there’s a way to do it.’ That offer’s still there, we’re prepared to talk to them tomorrow,” he told Fox News.

“Ultimately, they have to make a decision. It’s a very simple decision: if what they want is nuclear reactors so they can have electricity — there are so many other countries in the world that do that, and they don’t have to enrich their own uranium — they can do that,” Rubio added.

US bombing of Iran started with a fake-out

As Operation “Midnight Hammer” got underway on Saturday, a group of B-2 bombers took off from their base in Missouri and were noticed heading out toward the Pacific island of Guam, in what experts saw as possible pre-positioning for any US decision to strike Iran.

But they were a decoy. The real group of seven bat-winged, B-2 stealth bombers flew east undetected for 18 hours, keeping communications to a minimum, refueling in mid-air, the US military revealed on Sunday.

As the bombers neared Iranian airspace, a US submarine launched more than two dozen Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles. US fighter jets flew as decoys in front of the bombers to sweep for any Iranian fighter jets and missiles.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council must make the final decision on whether to close the Strait of Hormuzfollowing US bombing raids, Iran’s Press TV said on Sunday, after parliament was reported to have backed the measure.

Iran has long used the threat of closing the Strait, through which around 20% of global oil and gas demand flows, as a way to ward off Western pressure which is now at its peak after the overnight U.S. strikes on its nuclear facilities.

The decision to close the strait is not yet final and it was not officially reported that parliament had in fact adopted a bill to that effect.

Instead, a member of parliament’s national security commission Esmail Kosari was quoted on other Iranian media as saying: “For now, [parliament has] come to the conclusion we should close the Strait of Hormuz, but the final decision in this regard is the responsibility of the Supreme National Security Council.”
