Israel reportedly strikes Yemen in assassination bid on Houthi leader
The strike follows months of rising hostilities between Israel and the Houthis. The Houthis have openly supported Iran, condemning Israeli military action and backing Tehran’s right to develop its nuclear programme. The most recent strike adds to a series of Israeli operations in the region.
The strike follows months of rising hostilities between Israel and the Houthis, who have launched missiles and drones toward Israel in solidarity with Palestinians since the Gaza war began in October 2023. The Houthis have openly supported Iran, condemning Israeli military action and backing Tehran’s right to develop its nuclear programme.
The most recent strike, reported by The Times of Israel, adds to a series of Israeli operations in the region. Just days earlier, on June 10, Israeli warships and aircraft targeted the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah. Israel accused the Houthis of using the port to smuggle weapons, threatening a potential aerial and naval blockade unless attacks ceased.
No casualties have been confirmed in the latest strike. Meanwhile, both humanitarian and strategic concerns are mounting, as the conflict risks spilling further across the Middle East with the Houthis becoming an increasingly active proxy in the Iran-Israel standoff.
Further details on the reported assassination attempt and the condition of the Houthi leader remain unknown.

Chief of General Staff of Yemeni Armed Forces survives Israeli assassination attempt: Report
Major General Mohammed Abdul Karim al-Ghamari reportedly survived an assassination attempt. Israeli fighter jets carried out an airstrike against an area in the Arab nation’s capital. Ghamari is purportedly among the most prominent military leaders in Yemen. He is also considered to be one of the most distinguished figures responsible for launching missile and drone strikes from Yemen towards the Israeli-occupied territories.
The London-based and pan-Arab al-Araby al-Jadeed (New Arab) news outlet, citing sources speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that a massive explosion shook the southwestern neighborhood of Hadda in Sana’a late on Saturday, as Israeli warplanes bombed the district.
The sources added that the blast occurred as high-profile Yemeni military commanders, headed by Ghamari, were meeting to discuss a retaliatory operation against the occupying Tel Aviv regime.
Yemeni security forces immediately set up roadblocks at the site, and ambulances rushed to the scene.
According to Hebrew-language media outlets, the Israeli military is assessing the results of the aerial raid.
The Yemeni Ansarullah resistance movement has so far not issued any official statement regarding the assassination attempt directed at Ghamari, and his health condition following the attack.
Ghamari is purportedly among the most prominent military leaders in Yemen, having served as the chief of the general staff since December 2016.
He is also considered to be one of the most distinguished figures responsible for launching missile and drone strikes from Yemen towards the Israeli-occupied territories.
As the genocidal war on Gaza escalated, the Yemenis enforced a strategic blockade on essential maritime routes, to obstruct the delivery of military supplies to Israel and urge the international community to take action regarding the ongoing humanitarian emergency in Gaza.
The Yemeni Armed Forces have declared they will not stop their assaults unless Israel ceases its ground and aerial offensives in Gaza.
The devastating Israeli war has resulted in the deaths of at least 55,297 Palestinians so far, the majority of whom are women and children.
Israel Strikes Yemen in Attempt to Kill Houthi Chief of Staff
The Israeli military confirmed it conducted strikes in Yemen targeting a top military figure within the Iran-aligned Ansar Allah movement. The Israeli Defense Forces said the operation sought to kill Houthi Chief of Staff Muhammad Abd al-Karim al-Ghamari, but his status remains unconfirmed. The strike follows its wider operation against Iran-codenamed Rising Lion-which included hundreds of airstrikes on nuclear sites and military targets. “We are all projects of martyrdom, and we are not afraid of being targeted,” a Houthi source told Newsweek.
The Israeli military confirmed it conducted strikes in Yemen targeting a top military figure within the Iran-aligned Ansar Allah movement, widely known as the Houthis, in what officials described as a broader campaign against the Axis of Resistance following days of sustained combat with Iran. The Israeli Defense Forces said the operation sought to kill Houthi Chief of Staff Muhammad Abd al-Karim al-Ghamari, but his status remains unconfirmed.
“We will soon know if it succeeded,” an Israeli source told The Jerusalem Post following the Saturday night strike.
Multiple Israeli outlets and Saudi-based Al-Hadath reported that al-Ghamari was attending a high-level meeting that may have also included Mahdi al-Mashat, President of the Houthi-led Supreme Political Council. The strike coincided with Israeli air raids on Tehran, which the IDF said were timed alongside missile interception efforts during Iran’s latest barrage.
An Ansar Allah source told Newsweek the group would continue its campaign against Israel regardless of leadership losses. “We are all projects of martyrdom, and we are not afraid of being targeted,” the source said. “Every leader is succeeded by a thousand leaders.”
Ansar Allah has launched dozens of missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory since October 2023, following Hamas’s initial strike on Israel that triggered the current regional conflict. The group, which governs large areas of northern Yemen, has framed its actions as part of the broader resistance front aligned with Iran and Palestinian factions.
The Israeli strike follows its wider operation against Iran-codenamed Rising Lion-which included hundreds of airstrikes on nuclear sites and military targets. Iranian leaders, including Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Mohammed Bagheri, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps head Major General Hossein Salami, and IRGC Aerospace Forces commander Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, were reportedly killed in the strikes, along with multiple nuclear scientists.
Iran responded with its most extensive missile and drone assault to date, dubbed True Promise III, with hundreds of projectiles fired toward Israel since Friday. Both countries continued exchanging strikes into Saturday.
In past months, Israel has conducted operations that reportedly killed several senior Axis of Resistance figures, including Hezbollah’s Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas Political Bureau Chief Yahya Sinwar. Sinwar’s predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed during a visit to Iran, in an attack widely attributed to Israel.

A Yemeni security official has told Ynet that al-Ghamari is also the head of the Houthis’ missile program.
Saudi-based Al Hadath reported that the strike targeted a residential complex housing Houthi leaders near the Lebanese Hospital, just south of al-Sabeen Square in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. The area is known for hosting large weekly demonstrations against Israel. Initial information indicates the meeting may have included Mahdi al-Mashat, president of the Houthis’ Supreme Political Council.

Sky News Arabia also cited Yemeni sources saying that al-Ghamari was the intended target, though his death has not been confirmed. The same sources reported that the strike targeted a meeting of the Houthi Supreme Military Council.
The Houthis, who control much of western Yemen and receive backing from Iran, have launched dozens of missiles toward Israel in recent months, claiming solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. In early May, one of their missiles evaded interception and struck near Ben Gurion International Airport , significantly disrupting air traffic.
