BOSTON — It was an honest mistake, something Yankees rookie Jasson Domínguez owned up to in a professional manner after the game, but it was unacceptable and costly.

Domínguez was thrown out in scoring position in the seventh inning of Saturday night’s 4-3 loss to the Red Sox because he lost track of the count.

When Jasson Dominguez stepped into the batter’s box Wednesday night, something clicked. Three hits later, the New York Yankees had their series win, and Dominguez had shown exactly why the Bronx believes he’s their leadoff hitter of the future. But it was what happened between the lines that told the real story.

How Did Jasson Dominguez Show His Respect for Aaron Judge?

Dominguez turned in a masterful performance in game two of the three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at Yankee Stadium. He finished with three hits in four at-bats, walked once, drove in a run, and scored two valuable runs as the Yankees won 9-6.

The victory snapped a frustrating stretch for New York, which had dropped consecutive series to the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets. But it was Dominguez’s hustle that captured everyone’s attention.

The 22-year-old scored twice during the contest, showing off both his baseball IQ and speed on the basepaths. His first run came from second base on a Cody Bellinger hit. The second run, however, was something special.

In the sixth inning, Dominguez took off from first base on an Aaron Judge base hit and never stopped running. He scored all the way from first, putting the afterburners on to cross home plate and extend the Yankees’ lead.

After the game, Dominguez reflected on that crucial run and paid tribute to his captain. “I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to score that RBI for Judgie,’” he said.

That same inning, Dominguez added to his night with an RBI single to right field, driving in another important run for the home team.

What Makes This Season Different for Dominguez?

While Dominguez made his MLB debut in 2023, the 2025 campaign has become his breakout year. The young outfielder is hitting .269 with eight home runs, 34 RBIs, and a .774 OPS across 77 games this season.

Those numbers tell the story of a player finding his groove. Dominguez has collected 70 hits in 260 at-bats, including 15 doubles and one triple. More importantly, he’s settled into the leadoff spot with confidence.

“I’m able to walk and get those hits and run the bases,” Dominguez explained. “That helps me in that spot to be able to perform as a leadoff hitter. It means a lot when the manager trusts in you and makes me want to play harder.”

The Dominican outfielder has found his rhythm at the plate recently. “Lately, I’ve been feeling pretty good at the plate,” he said. “I feel like all the work I’m putting in is paying off.”

At his current pace, Dominguez is on track for more than 12 home runs and almost 60 RBIs this season. Manager Aaron Boone has taken notice of his young player’s development. After Wednesday’s win, Boone praised Dominguez’s steady approach.

“JD always has confidence,” Boone said. “He’s got an amazing skill set and super talented. I would say, and I’ve said this a lot, the first few months of the year here, maybe hasn’t been spectacular, but it’s been real steady.”

Boone highlighted multiple aspects of Dominguez’s game that have impressed him. “He gives you a mature at-bat, and he continues to improve in the outfield. You’re really seeing his baserunning be a real factor. Speed on the bases scoring first to home.”

The manager also noted Dominguez’s recent hot streak. “It’s pretty much every at-bat, he has been really dialed in going back to Toronto. He was excellent, and I feel like he’s gotten hot this past week.”

The Yankees will look to complete their series victory against the Mariners on Thursday. Following that, they’ll play their final regular-season series of the first half against the Chicago Cubs over the weekend in the Bronx.
