Redick, who joined the Lakers last summer, went on ESPN Los Angeles’ Mason & Ireland show on Thursday to speak on his first full offseason. Redick said that though he “didn’t really care for school,” he’s maintained an interest in learning outside of basketball, and spent the summer following that interest.

Redick began with the confession that he spends hours learning about various topics on the AI chatbot ChatGPT.
“I do have just a general curiosity about stuff. I’m the type of person who spends an hour and a half going down a deep, deep rabbit hole on ChatGPT. It used to be Wikipedia, but now it’s me and my friend Chat,” Redick said.
Redick said that he wanted to spend the summer growing his knowledge outside of basketball.
“You have to ask yourself a question every morning: What do I need to do to be good at my job? And the answer to that is very different every day,” Redick said. “The summer, to me, is an opportunity to grow outside of just Xs and Os. I think a lot about the culture that I wanna create — not just create, sustain.”

“Why would I not take that opportunity?” he said.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka casually dropped the news of Redick’s contract extension during a joint press conference on Thursday. Redick, who had no coaching experience prior to joining the Lakers, signed a four-year contract with the team last year, but is now getting an extension just one year in.
“It’s not lost on me, the sort of rarity of a first-time head coach getting an extension. I recognize how fortunate I am to be with an organization that supports me that way,” Redick said during the press conference.
Pelinka said the organization had “confidence and belief” in Redick as a coach, even this early on in his tenure.
“We think he’s a special coach with a special voice that’s really helping us to continue to define the culture of Lakers excellence, and we just wanted to make a clear statement that this is what we believe in, what we’re going to lean into and what our players are going to mold into as we continue to develop the identity,” Pelinka said.
In addition to McVay, Brady and his friend Chat, Redick added in Thursday’s press conference that he met with a number of NBA coaches this month while in Chicago. “Growth” has seemingly been a theme for Redick, with the coach emphasizing it across multiple areas of his life.
