MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) – On Thursday, the Joint Finance Committee canceled its meeting.

The meeting was expected to address school funding and tax cuts in the Wisconsin state budget, as well as some big-ticket items in the ongoing budget battle.

The Governor and state Republican leadership broke off face-to-face talks earlier this month, leaving the Joint Finance Committee to craft a budget that will be subject to the governor’s powerful veto pen.

That pen gives Gov. Evers the ability to issue partial vetoes, or the entire budget. The current budget expires at the end of the month.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) and Assembly Finance Co-Chair Mark Born (R-Beaver Dam) issued a joint statement following the cancellation of Thursday’s meeting, stating, “Assembly Republicans will not pass a budget that doesn’t have a guarantee from Gov. Evers of tax relief in it.”
