LAKE CITY, Ark. (KAIT) – Lake City officials are giving residents new places to do outdoor activities.

The city is using its general fund to build two pickleball courts and one basketball court in town.

Mayor Cameron Tate said they are using the foundation of the gym from the torn-down school building as the base for the new construction.

He said they will put asphalt over it, paint it, and put up the court equipment.

Tate added that this project will give residents something to do when they go out.

“We’re trying to get more things for the youth to be involved, keep them off the streets, and let them have fun outside and not be playing on the video games so often,” Tate said.

The mayor said this is just one of many projects begun or completed recently.

“So far, we have added a dog park in that area, we’re adding pickleball and basketball courts, and we would like to get a grant for a playground there,” Tate said.

The courts will be located at the corner of Fourth Street and Catfish Drive.

Tate said construction has not started, but when it does, it should not take long.

He expects the courts to be completed by the end of the summer.
