The League to Save Lake Tahoe is taking a bold step to preserve the local environment by filing a lawsuit aimed at halting a significant development project. This move comes in response to Placer County’s approval of the Village at Palisades Tahoe Specific Plan, which has raised concerns over increased traffic, air pollution, and water quality degradation in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The proposed development, backed by Alterra Mountain Company, plans to introduce:
- Nearly 300,000 square feet of commercial space
- 850 residential units encompassing approximately 1,500 bedrooms
- Over 2,000 additional parking spaces
This expansion is predicted to result in 3,300 new daily car trips on peak days. A significant volume of this traffic, 1,353 car trips, is expected to flow into the Tahoe Basin, adding to the existing pollution burden on Tahoe’s air and water.
Community Concerns and Opposition
The League to Save Lake Tahoe, known for its Keep Tahoe Blue campaign, is not alone in its concern. Partnering with Sierra Watch, a conservation group with a decade-long history of advocating for Olympic Valley’s future, they are undertaking this legal battle to halt the proposed development.
“Alterra’s proposed development would exacerbate every current issue in Tahoe—from lake clarity to housing and public safety—while we’re committed to protecting this cherished environment,” said Tom Mooers, Executive Director of Sierra Watch.

The development poses a direct challenge to federally mandated objectives aimed at reducing car dependency in the region. The anticipated increase in vehicle traffic will aggravate roadway damage and contribute to runoff that impacts Lake Tahoe’s water quality. In fact, a 2022 report highlighted that:
- Over 70% of fine sediment pollution in Lake Tahoe originates from road runoff and urbanization
