CPTPP: UK has joined Asia’s trade club but what is it?
CPTPP is a trade agreement between 11 countries in Asia and the Pacific. Between them, they generate 13% of the world’s income. The UK is the first non-founding country to join, and will be the pact’s second biggest economy after Japan. The key perk is greater access to each others’ markets, and a pledge to eliminate or reduce 95% of import charges or tariffs. But some are kept to protect sensitive domestic areas, such as Japan’s rice farming industry. The gains from the expanded accord is expected to be fairly small – around 0.08% of GDP over 10 years, according to the government’s best stab at an estimate. In 2017, the CPTPP nations accounted for about £1 in every £12 of foreign investment in the UK, and the same going the other way – supporting business and jobs. In return, countries must co-operate on regulations such as food standards. Unlike the European Union, theCP TPP is neither a single market nor a customs union.

Macron and Starmer commit to Ukraine for ‘as long as necessary’
Macron and Starmer vow ‘unwavering’ Ukraine support. Prime minister marked Armistice Day at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris. Meeting comes as questions are being asked about US President-elect Donald Trump’s support for Ukraine after he said he could end the war “in one day” There were no details on whether the two leaders would support allowing Ukraine to use long-range Storm Shadow missiles deep into Russian territory. The key decision-maker as far as London and Paris are concerned remains President Biden, who has so far have not given Ukraine permission to use the missiles against targets inside Russia. The meeting comes as fighting between Ukraine and Russia intensifies. On Sunday, Russia’s defence ministry said it intercepted 84 drones over six regions, including some approaching some Ukrainian regions. The UK and France have said backing Ukraine against Russia is essential when it comes to protecting the European continent as a whole. The pair discussed European security and “the prospects for the relationship” between the EU and the UK, alongside discussions the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

UK edges towards post-Brexit youth visa deal with EU
UK edges towards youth visa deal with EU ahead of summit next month. Labour has previously said it has “no plans” for such a scheme. Agreement has emerged as a key European demand in ongoing negotiations. Both sides have also expressed a renewed interest in a defence and security pact amid the war in Ukraine. The UK currently offers visas allowing young people from 12 non-EU countries to study or work in the UK for up to two years. Those from Australia, Canada or New Zealand can extend by a further year. These visas are subject to annual quotas, ranging from 100 visas for Andorra to 42,000 for Australia. Applicants from these countries need at least £2,530 in savings, cannot apply for most benefits, and have to pay an annual NHS surcharge.

UK politics – latest: Farage admits UK’s post-Brexit deal with EU ‘not very good’ as Reform top shock new poll
UK politics – latest: Farage admits UK’s post-Brexit deal with EU ‘not very good’ as Reform top shock new poll. Reform leader Nigel Farage has called on the UK to be “friendly’ with the EU. But he warned that “industrial collaboration” with EU could result in “less flexibility” in forming trade deals with the US. Reform has topped a bombshell YouGov voting intention poll for the first time. Farage’s right-wing party would take 25 per cent of the votes, the poll showed, while 24 per cent would pick Labour and 21% would vote for the Conservatives. Sir Keir Starmer is seeking to reset relations with EU bloc, amid threats from the Donald Trump administration of a trade war between the US and EU. The prime minister downplayed the US president’s threats to impose tariffs on the EU and UK, after EU and US stock markets tumbled on Monday. ‘Ruthless pragmatism’ needed in UK-EU relations, says minister Nick Thomas-Symonds.

No sequins or dancing at EU summit – but it’ll be an extravaganza nonetheless
First formal summit for European leaders since Brexit. Downing Street is going for the full extravaganza. The atmosphere is entirely different to the last time the UK and the EU circled each other at a formal summit. There will be important commitments – diplomatic language at least – on energy, on migration, agriculture, on data sharing, the list goes on. But only an “agreement in principle”, not the real final deal, will be ready for Monday. Be on guard for any declarations of a heroic or profound shift, writes Damian Grammaticas in his column for the Mail on Sunday, and join him in the studio on Sunday night at 8pm on BBC One and Monday morning on BBC Radio 4.
