The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kolkata Police, probing the alleged rape of a 24-year-old student, on Tuesday questioned the vice-principal of the law college for the second time.

Sources said 31-year-old Monojit Mishra, the prime accused, allegedly spoke to the vice-principal over the phone on June 26, a day after the alleged crime took place.

“We are keen to ascertain the nature of the conversation and whether it pertained to the crime in any capacity,” a police officer involved in the probe told The Indian Express.

The ongoing probe involves extensive analysis of the call detail records of the three arrested accused, as authorities work to uncover the full extent of their communications following the crime.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma said that due to the sensitive nature of the case, the SIT is refraining from sharing the probe details.

“This is a very sensitive case. I don’t want to reveal the investigation details. We have received a lot of data. We are analysing that data. We don’t want to disclose it to avoid any impact on our investigation,” Verma said on the sidelines of an event.

He said that all necessary police actions have been taken, and further investigative steps will be pursued thoroughly. “Everything has been kept under the purview of the probe,” he said.

Noting the “swift police response”, the police chief said the FIR was registered promptly and the three main accused were immediately arrested.

According to police, Monojit Mishra, a repeat offender, has a track record of securing bail or evading consequences through influence. “This overconfidence led him to not care about the CCTV cameras placed on the college campus,” said a police officer.

On Monday, the nine-member SIT sent the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) from the law college’s CCTV cameras for forensic examination, along with the seized mobile phones of the accused, including that of Mishra.

Sources said the SIT has retrieved the CCTV footage of the “eleventh hour” — the hour preceding the crime. Police believe that the CCTV footage will be crucial evidence against the accused.

Meanwhile, sources in the police said that relevant sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act will be added to the case since they have found evidence of video transmission related to the incident.

In her complaint, the woman has alleged that during the sexual assault, the accused made a video of the act, which they then used to try and silence her. Speaking to The Indian Express, a senior police officer said the woman had told the investigators that the video of the crime was on Monojit Mishra’s cellphone.

So far, four people have been arrested in connection with the case: Monojit Mishra (31), a contractual staffer who was a TMC students’ wing functionary; two students – Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20) – and a security guard, Pinaki Banerjee. It is alleged that the two students allegedly forced the woman into a guard room and stopped her from escaping while Mishra raped her.
