COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Multiple law enforcement agencies are responding to a reported active shooter incident in Coeur d’Alene on Sunday afternoon.

Coeur d’Alene police and fire crews and the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office are on the scene near Canfield Mountain.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said crews with the Kootenai County Fire and Rescue responded to a wildfire at Canfield Mountain around 1:30 p.m. The sheriff’s office said during a press conference that someone then shot at the responding firefighters.

2 people are confirmed dead as of Sunday at 4:30 p.m. The sheriff’s office said both people who died are believed to be fire personnel.

KCSO says civilians are evacuating the area and the shooter is still at large. The sheriff’s office says an active investigation is ongoing, and police are taking sniper fire on the mountain. The sheriff also said there is still an active fire in the Canfield area as crews cannot safely enter the area to fight the fire.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said the sheriff will hold another press conference at 9:30 p.m. for an update to the situation.

The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook advising people to avoid the Coeur d’Alene area as law enforcement deals with an active shooter incident.

Kootenai County Emergency Management issued a shelter-in-place order for everyone south of Hayden Lake Road and east of 15th Street in Coeur d’Alene.

15th Street next to Cherry Hill BMX Track is also closed. Residents are urged to avoid the area.
