Sen. Mark Warner, the ranking member on the Senate Intelligence Committee, offered a cautious assessment of US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities after Trump administration officials gave a classified briefing to the chamber on Thursday.
“Clearly, damage was inflicted on the Iranian nuclear program,” Warner said, though he added that “it is going to take time to get a final assessment of how much damage.”
“The thing that I’ve had some concern about is when people jump to a conclusion too early. I mean, clearly, the president making a comment on Saturday night, before any assessment, of ‘total obliteration’ — listen, I hope that is the final assessment. But if not, does that end up providing a false sense of comfort to the American people or, for that matter, the world?” Warner asked.

Sen. Elissa Slotkin, a former CIA analyst and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, also said her takeaway from the briefing was that “it’s still too early to know exactly what the battle damage was, and that’s normal.”
Still, like Warner, Slotkin said she thinks what she heard from officials about the strikes “was significant both in terms of setting back the program but then also in the mentality of the regime.”
She stressed that the intelligence community and the military “should be nonpartisan, apolitical.” The military conducts strikes and then the intelligence agencies assess the damage, “and that’s by design, right, so you’re not cooking the books from the military,” Slotkin said.
“That’s going to take a minute,” she added.
Sen. Jeff Merkley, a Democrat that sits on the Foreign Relations Committee, told the briefing made clear that “much assessment is yet to be done” because “nobody really knows how much damage has occurred because there’s been no ability to inspect in a fashion that would give you that information.”
When asked what the next steps should be for the US, Israel and Iran, Merkley said diplomatic work to rebuild relationships so that an agreement can be forged because countries are still skeptical of each other.

Following an American attack on June 22 that hit the nuclear sites with bunker-buster bombs, U.S. President Donald Trump was able to help negotiate a ceasefire that came into effect on Tuesday.
In his appearance on Thursday, he sat in front of plain brown curtains to give his address, similar to his June 19 message.

With tech platforms reducing their reliance on human fact-checkers, users are increasingly utilizing AI-powered chatbots — including xAI’s Grok — in search of reliable information, but their responses are often themselves prone to misinformation.
“The investigation into Grok’s performance during the first days of the Israel-Iran conflict exposes significant flaws and limitations in the AI chatbot’s ability to provide accurate, reliable, and consistent information during times of crisis,” said the study from the Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab) of the Atlantic Council, an American think tank.
“Grok demonstrated that it struggles with verifying already-confirmed facts, analyzing fake visuals, and avoiding unsubstantiated claims.”
The DFRLab analyzed around 130,000 posts in various languages on the platform X, where the AI assistant is built in, to find that Grok was “struggling to authenticate AI-generated media.”

“If there ever was a time for maximum pressure, it would be now, on the back end of a strike,” said Behnam Ben Taleblu, the senior director of the Iran program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. His group has been a prominent advocate for tougher economic restrictions on Iran for years.
“Washington needs a strategy to constrain the resources and revenues available to this group to make sure they can’t build back better,” he said.
Trump initiated the stricter approach during his first presidential term after withdrawing from the nuclear accord that the Obama administration struck with Iran in 2015. Trump reinstated the policy through a National Security Presidential Memorandum weeks into his second administration.
That led to a series of fresh sanctions targeting Iran’s oil industry – the country’s top source of revenue – and its supply chains even as Washington held talks with Tehran over the latter’s nuclear program.
Now Trump could be considering new talks with Iran with the prospect of sanctions relief as a “big carrot”, according to Dina Esfandiary, the Middle East geoeconomics lead for Bloomberg Economics.
