New Delhi: A 60-year-old man was detained and later released on Friday for allegedly raising slogans during chief minister Rekha Gupta’s first public appearance since she was attacked two days ago. He was not anywhere near the security cordon, said police, who immediately whisked him away. The incident took place in east Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar, where Gupta was attending the launch of Vastrika 2025, an event organised by Association of Wholesale Readymade Garment Dealers, under tight security arrangements.Police identified the man as Praveen Sharma, a resident of Ajeet Nagar in Gandhi Nagar, who runs a local cable TV business. “Claiming to have been a BJP worker for four decades, Sharma allegedly began shouting slogans against Gandhi Nagar MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely while the latter was addressing the gathering,” a senior officer said.Police said Sharma was standing behind barricades on an adjoining street when he started raising his voice, demanding that “his message should reach CM”. “He was upset about not being able to go to the stage and wanted to make his voice heard during the event,” a police source said.In a video circulating online, Sharma was seen claiming that he is a former district president of BJP in Shahdara. He further said he was upset about not being invited on stage and added that he now regretted his actions. The senior officer said, “The situation was immediately brought under control and no security breach occurred. The chief minister and other dignitaries remained secure at all times.” Police made extensive arrangements in and around the venue, with multiple layers of barricades and additional deployment. The cops said Sharma was extensively questioned for his disruptive conduct before his release. “No VIP security was compromised at any stage,” the officer added.
