The Marblehead High boys tennis team (15-2) began last week with a shutout win over Gloucester on May 19, 5-0. But then, they dropped the regular season finale to non-league Newburyport, 4-1. Coach Elisabeth Foukal’s team is seeded 13th in the final Division 2 power rankings, and is scheduled to host Algonquin Regional (9-7), the 20th seed, in a Round of 32 matchup on Wednesday, May 28, starting at 4:30 p.m. There are 51 teams in this division statewide, and 36 made the state tournament. Girls tennis takes on familiar foe Masco to start states on Thursday, May 29. The Marblehead girls took on non- league host Wakefield to close out last week on May 21, and they defeated the Warriors going away, 7-2. All-star junior pitcher Tessa Francis knocked in three runs on three hits.

Girls tennis takes on familiar foe Masco to start states on Thursday, May 29
The Marblehead High girls tennis team (13-4) completed the regular season last week with a couple of 5-0 shutout wins over Winthrop and Salem.
Coach Tracy Ackerman’s team is seeded 18th in the final Division 2 power rankings, and is scheduled to take on a familiar foe Masconomet, the 15th seed, at Boxford in a Round of 32 matchup on Thursday, May 29, beginning at 4 p.m. There are 57 teams in this division statewide, and 41 made the postseason.
Road warriors keep on winning
The Marblehead High softball team (16-3) is moving steadily up the Division 2 power rankings. After another successful three-win week, coach Johnny Gold’s team is seeded 11th, as of May 23. There will be one more poll on May 27, before the tournament pairings are announced the next day. Preliminary round games will get underway on Friday, May 30. There are 62 teams in this division.
The Marblehead girls took on non-league host Wakefield to close out last week on May 21, and they defeated the Warriors going away, 7-2.
Kate Andriano went 2-for-4 with a double that resulted in three RBI. All-Star catcher Luka Bornhorst collected three hits and one RBI, and also scored three times. All-star junior pitcher Tessa Francis knocked in three runs on three hits. In the circle, Francis gave up two runs, none earned, on three hits. She whiffed 12.
The Magicians faced host Medford the day before the win over Wakefield, and were able to gallop past the Mustangs, 9-3.
Francis allowed five hits and two earned runs, while striking out 15 to record yet another win. She also helped herself out in the third with a three-run homer. Bornhorst chipped in with two hits. Lyla McGovern doubled home three runs. Ashley and Isabel Mortensen, Nora Mahan and Kate Andriano also contributed to the winning cause with hits.
The Magicians started their road trip last week with a 12-0 shutout win over Winthrop on May 19.
Francis tossed five innings, yielding two hits. She fanned nine. Sophomore Kelian Salem followed her to the circle, and threw two scoreless innings with one strikeout.
Offensively, Bornhorst led the way with a double and a triple, driving home four. McGovern accounted for two hits, along with Hailey Schmitt and Mahan. Tessa Andriano was credited with two hits and two RBI.
Girls lacrosse topples Winthrop
The Marblehead High girls lacrosse team (9-3 in the Northeastern Conference, 6-2 in the NEC Dunn Division, 11-6 overall) took on host Winthrop on May 20, and defeated the Vikings, 16-3. The state tournament-bound Magicians are now seeded 24th in the Division 2 power rankings, as of May 23. There are 54 teams in this division.
Kathryn Commoss (2 goals, 3 assists), Gretchen Smith (1 assist), Caitlyn Ryan (2 goals), Zoe Dwyer (2 goals, 3 assists), Ramona Gillett (1 goal), Maddie Forbes (2 goals, 2 assists), Sammy Walker (1 goal), Emma Ryan (3 goals), Avery Barbeau (1 goal, 1 assist), Anna Rausch (1 goal) and Ella McConnell (1 goal, 2 assists) were the team’s offensive contributors. Goalie Molly Bullard came up with four saves.
