Dr. Hamdan answered some questions about her new book, including where the idea for the book came from, her favorite part of the writing process and how the book complements her teaching and research.

How would you describe the book in one sentence?

The book explores the transformative role of artificial intelligence in dentistry, offering a comprehensive look at its clinical applications, ethical challenges and future potential across various dental disciplines.

Is this your first book? What is your publishing history?

Yes, this is my first book. I have authored and published several studies on artificial intelligence in dentistry with the most recent paper titled “Evaluating Dental AI Research Papers: Key Considerations for Editors and Reviewers.”

Where did the idea for this book come from?

A colleague (and co-editor) Dr. Prabhat Kumar Chaudhari reached out and proposed this idea to the remaining editors. We are all part of the Topic Group in Dental Diagnostics and Digital Dentistry WHO/ITU/WIPO Focus Group AI on Health.

What was your favorite part of the writing/editing process?

My favorite part was when everything started to click during the writing process, especially when I was able to connect the technical aspects of AI with real-life applications in oral radiology. It felt great to take something complex and make it relatable for everyone, from dental professionals to the general public. I also enjoyed working with experts from various backgrounds. It was so rewarding to collaborate with people who brought diverse perspectives and deep knowledge to the table.

What do you hope to accomplish with this book?

The goal of this book is to educate dental professionals, students, researchers and the broader public about the impact of AI on dentistry, providing insights into its practical applications while addressing ethical considerations and encouraging responsible integration of AI in dental practice.

How does this book advance or complement your research and/or teaching?

This book complements my research and teaching by offering valuable insights into the intersection of AI and oral health, particularly in oral and maxillofacial imaging. It aligns with my work on developing AI models using no-code platforms, as well as exploring the impact of AI on clinical decision-making and evaluating the ethical implications of AI implementation in healthcare. By integrating these themes, the book deepens the understanding of how AI can enhance diagnostic accuracy and patient care, while also addressing the critical ethical considerations that I focus on in my research.

If you have recently published a book, or if you have one coming out, we would like to feature your publication in an upcoming Marquette Bookshelf feature. More information on the submission process is available online.
