PELHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A supermarket in Pelham is at risk of losing its business license according to the city.

Mi Pueblo Supermarket LLC is described on their website as the largest multicultural store in the state of Alabama, boasting a wide range of products from Mexico, Central and South America.

The store has two locations: one in Homewood and one in Pelham. The Pelham one is located at 3060 Pelham Pkwy.

The Pelham City Council plans to hold a public hearing on Monday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at Pelham City Hall.

The city of Pelham did not give details as to why they are considering revoking the supermarket’s license. However, WBRC did receive a statement saying the city has communicated with Mi Pueblo management about the necessary steps to comply with state law.

“The City has an obligation to its citizens to ensure that the laws and ordinances of the City and the State of Alabama are followed by all of the City’s citizens, both individual and corporate. When an entity in Pelham is not in compliance with the laws and ordinances of the City or the State, City staff works diligently to assist those entities to make sure they are in compliance. The city has communicated fairly and diligently with the entity on the steps necessary to achieve compliance. At the point that the City’s assistance is no longer effective, the City follows state law in addressing the non-compliance. These laws and ordinances are enforced fairly, equitably, and uniformly for the benefit of all businesses, citizens and residents of Pelham.”

Mi Pueblo shared a post on Facebook after support from the community.

Mi Pueblo’s attorney, Hannah Roberts, also shared a response to the community as well, saying:

Mi Pueblo has been deeply moved by the recent outpouring of support and expressed concern from the community and is grateful for the trust shown during this time. The company remains dedicated to serving the diverse needs of customers from all walks of life and all backgrounds, and to continuing its role as a welcoming and reliable part of the community. Mi Pueblo is working constructively and in full cooperation with local officials to address any outstanding issues and is confident they can be resolved in a positive and constructive way. The company views this as an opportunity to build a long-term, positive relationship that supports local officials in the important work of administering city affairs—a responsibility that benefits the entire community. At its core, Mi Pueblo has always believed that strengthening and supporting the community it serves is the foundation of its mission.
