Microsoft has been pretty quiet about when Windows 11 25H2 will drop. The company has confirmed in the past that it will aim to get a big update out every year in the second half of each year, and each of these updates will sport the name “XXH2,” where XX are the last two digits of the year the update was released. Last year, we had the big 24H2 update, and it introduced some cool new features.

Now, Microsoft has quietly confirmed that 25H2 is not too far away now. A recent update to the Dev version of Windows 11 changes the build name to 25H2, meaning that the update is now making its way through the testing rounds.

Microsoft reveals Windows 11 25H2 on the Dev branch

On the Windows Insider Blogs, Microsoft shares what’s new in the latest Windows 11 Dev build. There are some nice new features, such as some tweaks to Windows 11’s 1Password integration that make going passwordless easier.

However, there’s also this interesting nugget that appears on the Windows 11 Dev notes, but not the Beta notes:

With this build today, Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel will see the versioning updated under Settings > System > About (and winver) to version 25H2. This denotes that Windows 11, version 25H2 will be this year’s annual feature update. As mentioned here, Windows 11 will have an annual feature update cadence that releases in the second half of the calendar year. For more information, see this blog post here.

So, why is Microsoft not getting people all excited for 25H2 with news and updates? Why are they just slipping it into these Dev patch notes without much fanfare? Well, if the rumors we’ve heard are true, this update won’t be the huge feature-laden hit that 24H2 was. Which is probably for the best, because even today, some people haven’t even got the 24H2 update just yet. I think if Microsoft pushed out another huge feature pack, it would overload their bugfixing department for sure.
