Moldavite Dreams on the move: Business returning to Shelburne Falls roots
Crystal Visions, formerly known as Moldavite Dreams, will be closing its doors in Greenfield later this summer and reopening as Crystal Visions in Shelburne Falls. Owner Ellie Richardson said the move is a return to the shop’s original location from when it first opened as Crystal more than 25 years ago. Richardson plans to remove the used clothing sales from her business model and focus more on candles, incense, tarot cards and crystals, while also giving the store a new name to match. The new location has a great view of the Bridge of Flowers and will be open on weekends and weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., while the Greenfield location is open on weekdays until the merchandise is fully liquidated.
The shop, formerly known as Moldavite Dreams, will be closing its doors on Main Street in Greenfield later this summer and reopening as Crystal Visions on State Street in Shelburne Falls. Owner Ellie Richardson said the move is a return to the shop’s original location from when it first opened as Crystal more than 25 years ago.
“The store’s roots are actually in Shelburne Falls. The original owner, Maija Meijers, actually started the store as Crystal at the exact location of 44 State St. that I just moved to,” Richardson said. “The opportunity came up to go back home and I jumped on it.”
Richardson, a Shelburne Falls native, has owned the store since 2016, but has worked at the shop even longer. During her time with the business, it relocated to Greenfield and was rebranded as Zemi, and then again as Moldavite Dreams.
Richardson said when she bought Moldavite Dreams she was told she had to purchase it “all or nothing,” and while she never really set out to be in the thrift store business, she loved the store.
“I didn’t really want to deal with all the clothing, but I wanted a crystal shop. So I went for it, and since I bought it one of my goals was to move it back to Shelburne Falls and just open the crystal shop part of it,” Richardson said.
Richardson plans to remove the used clothing sales from her business model and focus more on candles, incense, tarot cards and crystals, while also giving the store a new name to match.
“I went with Crystal Visions to honor its original roots and make it my own at the same time,” Richardson said. “It’s more of a metaphysical; there’s candles, wooden boxes and journals and tumbling stones, things like that.”
Richardson noted the new location on the Buckland side of Shelburne Falls has a great view of Bridge of Flowers.
“It’s beautiful downtown Shelburne Falls and I’ve got my back window with a view of the Bridge of Flowers,” she said. “It’s a breath of fresh air.”
Crystal Visions in Shelburne Falls is currently open on weekends, while the Moldavite Dreams location in Greenfield is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until the Greenfield shop’s merchandise is fully liquidated. Once that happens, Richardson will expand Crystal Vision’s operating hours.
At the liquidation sale, shoppers can peruse used clothing priced at $5 per item or fill a trash bag with used clothes for $70. Richardson said the sale is a great deal, featuring quality clothing that is valued much higher than the sale price.
Richardson said she had hoped to be fully moved out of the Greenfield location by the end of June, but with several racks and boxes still filled with items, she believes it will be closer to the end of July or early August when Moldavite Dreams is fully closed.
“It’s the end of an era here,” Richardson said.
