PHOENIX — Before you book that vacation, experts want you to stop and do your homework.

Scammers are trying to cash in on your travel plans.

12News is sharing some tips from experts on how you can keep your money safe.

From toll road scams for cross-country drivers and fake flight rebooking sites for cancellations to bogus Real ID “expediters,” scammers are targeting travelers when they’re most distracted.

“It’s book now—$69 flight to Vegas, but it doesn’t call out an airline, or it doesn’t show anything on the site, or it doesn’t show anything in the email that’s specific to a carrier… we receive those regularly,” said Jesse Miller, a security expert with Trend Micro.

Miller said his wife does most of the travel planning for their family vacations, and with that comes a lot of emails from travel sites.

He said, unfortunately, as those come through, that’s when all too often they notice the so-called “great deals” start happening.

“They are absolutely, 100% scams based on spam email,” he said.

As a security expert with Trend Micro, Miller relies on software to catch scammers.

“Software never lets its guard down,” he said. “Software never isn’t paying attention, and especially in the connected world that we live right now, you don’t know when the scam is coming.”

“Shockingly, there’s one in every 33 newly registered vacation-related websites that are either malicious or suspicious,” said Paul Tucker, chief information security officer for BOK Financial. “These are the things that are happening right now.”

Tucker, who leads a cybersecurity team, has some advice for you to keep your money safe and identify safe while planning a trip and during your travels.

“Awareness,” he said. “…what we see today is a lot of AI-driven scams.”

Tucker says you should look out for fake websites, emails, texts, and social media profiles.

“Communicate with the host and request a live video tour,” he said.

Tucker said it’s also important to use a VPN when traveling, keep your devices updated, activate and secure your digital wallet, and set up travel notifications with your bank.

And whether you rely on software like Miller to catch scammers or double, triple-check everything on your own when making reservations or booking flights, there’s one thing he wants everyone to be mindful of-

“We are all targeted,” said Miller. “Every U.S. consumer is targeted.”

And he says if that “great deal” seems too good to be true—it probably is.
