Parts of the national capital received light rain on Sunday as monsoon finally arrived in Delhi, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi for Sunday and Monday, forecasting rain every day until July 5. Earlier this month, the IMD had predicted the monsoon would reach Delhi by June 24-25.

However, its progress was delayed due to an anti-cyclonic circulation. Historically, the average onset date for the monsoon in Delhi is June 27. The Safdarjung weather station, considered Delhi’s representative observatory, recorded only “trace” rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, and 5.1 mm between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. the same day.

Delhi’s air quality was recorded in the ‘satisfactory’ category with an air quality index (AQI) of 85 at 9 a.m., as per the Central Pollution Control Board. An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 to 100 ‘satisfactory’.

The rain led to water logging around the Lodhi Crematorium area and areas of Seelampur. The Delhi government helpline for waterlogging had received at least 6 calls till 8 p.m.
