Montgomery man pleads guilty following armed robbery at dry cleaning business
Zedekiah Sykes, 58, pleads guilty to his role in an armed robbery. Sykes and three other people robbed a Montgomery business in March. The three men gained access to the safe and stole about $8,000 in cash. The robbers then zip-tied the owner’s hand and feet, stole his cell phone and keys.
Thursday, Zedekiah Sykes, 58, of Montgomery, pleaded guilty to his role in an armed robbery at a dry cleaning business in March that led to one man being injured.
According to court records and Sykes’s plea agreement, Sykes and three other people robbed the establishment on March 10 after forcing their way in through the front door with a rock.
Once inside, the three confronted the business owner and forced him into an office with a locked safe. One of the suspects pulled a gun-later determined to be a BB gun-and demanded the owner open the safe.
When the owner hesitated, the suspect struck him in the face. The three men gained access to the safe and stole about $8,000 in cash.
The robbers then zip-tied the owner’s hand and feet, stole his cell phone and keys, and left the store in his vehicle.
Sykes pleaded guilty to one count of Hobbs Act Robbery, a federal offense that carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled in the next few months.
On May 27, police also arrested Spencer Thomas, 57, of Prattville in connection to the case. He was indicted as one of Sykes’ accomplices.
