Montgomery School No. 50 holds annual health fair
Helen Barrett Montgomery School No. 50 will host its third annual Health and Wellness Fair this Saturday. The event was inspired by the late Barbara “Punkin” Love. Love was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in June 2022 and passed away just six weeks later.
Love, affectionately known as the “Mother of School No. 50,” was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in June 2022 and passed away just six weeks later.
Her experience, marked by a lack of access to preventative care, underscores the importance of community-centered health education.
The event was launched in Love’s honor to raise awareness, dismantle healthcare barriers, and connect families with resources for preventive care and overall well-being.
Love’s family believes that early screenings could have made a significant difference in her battle with cancer.
Principal Lakisha Taylor, whose commitment to her students and community began even during her mother’s final days, continues to champion this cause.
This year’s fair will feature a range of community health partners, including the University of Rochester’s Wilmot Cancer Center, Fidelis Care, Trillium Health, the Mobile Mammography Center, Eastman Oral Health, and Common Ground Health.
The event runs through 3 p.m. Helen Barrett Montgomery School No. 50 is located at 301 Seneca Avenue in Rochester.
