In a shocking development, a student of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta has been arrested after a woman accused him of rape on campus. The accused, identified as Mahaveer Toppannavar alias Parmanand Jain, was arrested by Kolkata Police on Friday night after a complaint was filed at Haridevpur Police Station.The woman alleged that the incident took place inside the IIM Calcutta campus. Based on her complaint, the police arrested the student and launched an investigation.“Late last evening, a woman reported at Haridevpur Police Station that a student inside the IIM Calcutta campus raped her. Based on her complaint, a case has been registered, and the accused has been arrested,” officials told the media.Speaking to news agency ANI, Mahaveer’s mother said the family was shocked by the arrest and had no information about why he had been detained.“We received a call from his friend around 11 in the night. He told us that my son has been detained and he doesn’t know the reason… We have no clue why our son has been arrested… We want to meet our son and talk to him,” she told ANI.She further said, “He was in the final year of his college… We do not know anything here in Kolkata. Where the police station is or the court. My son is innocent. He has come so far to study. He will never do such a dirty thing.”Police have not yet released further details, saying that the investigation is still ongoing.
