Mysterious object in space ‘unlike anything we have seen before’ is sending out strange signals
Scientists have discovered an unusual object in space, and they have yet to determine what it is. The object was found within our own Milky Way galaxy, roughly 15,000 light-years away from Earth. It gives off pulses of radio waves and X-rays, and repeats the cycle of X-ray and radio waves every 44 minutes.
Live Science reports that astronomers have discovered the object, which they have named ASKAP J1832-0911, due to the strange signals that it gives off.
According to CBS, the object was found within our own Milky Way galaxy, roughly 15,000 light-years away from Earth.
The object (or objects, such as a pair of twin stars in close orbit) give off pulses of radio waves and X-rays, and repeats the cycle of X-rays and radio waves every 44 minutes.
Scientists theorize that the object could be a highly magnetized neutron star or white dwarf, which can give off similar radio signal pulses every few seconds. However, they have yet to find an explanation for how the length or intensity of the pulses.
The discovery of the object came through the use of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and through NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, the world’s most powerful x-ray telescope.
