N.Y. brothers bond in the booming business of fireworks
Jaden Simms started his career with TNT Fireworks only a year ago. His brother Jay Simms is the one testing the fireworks. Because of Jay’s autism, this has become a challenge that he has learned to overcome and love. “I’m at work, but it doesn’t feel like I’re at work,” Jaden says of his job. “When I learn from him, it makes me feel more confident and inspiring me to keep moving forward,” Jay says of their brother. “My dad actually was the one who introduced me to fireworks, like, because he brings red torpedoes at us and then he usually throws them on the ground,” Jay said.
“I work with people in every aspect of my life and I love them, I love people,” Simms said. “There’s a lot of revenue that comes with this type of thing. This is a sole proprietorship. So you get to keep a percentage of the sales you make. So that’s a motivator for you to sell more and learn about your product.”
But as Jaden is on the streets selling the merchandise, his brother Jay Simms is the one testing them.
“It takes hours to do because last time I did it, it took six hours to do,” pyrotechnician Jay Simms said. “We test it out, because if you don’t, then that’s going to turn out to be a whole different situation.”
Starting a career as a pyrotechnician for several years, he has always been a fan of the Fourth of July.
“My dad actually was the one who introduced me to fireworks, like, because he brings red torpedoes at us and then he usually throws them on the ground,” Jay said. “We were wondering what that was. That’s what made us obsessed with fireworks.”
But because of Jay’s autism, this has become a challenge that he has learned to overcome and love.
“I didn’t know until I was 12 years old,” Jay said. “I’m still who I am. But at the same time, I learned how to control it. Be more mature. I learned that from my brother. Because he knows what he’s up against. So when I learn from him, it makes me feel more confident and inspiring me to keep moving forward.”
Sharing a brotherhood bond in a booming business.
A few things have changed, like the tariffs, but one thing is for sure, as people keep coming back for the search of thrills and spirit of patriotism, the Simms will always have dynamite in their blood.
“I love watching fireworks,” Jaden said. “And my brother, my older brother, he’s always had a love for fireworks. I’m at work, but it doesn’t feel like I’m at work.”
