Martinez was in his eighth season leading the Nationals, which marked his first managerial job in the league. He took over ahead of the 2018 campaign, and then he led the team to its first and only World Series title the following year when they beat the Houston Astros in seven games. That, however, was the team’s last playoff appearance. They have not had a winning record in the six seasons since, and they’ve finished in last in their division in all but one of those campaigns. In total, Martinez went 500-621 as the team’s manager.
Rizzo was first hired by the Nationals as an assistant general manager in 2006, and then he was promoted to the top job in 2009.
Mike DeBartolo will take over as the interim general manager for the Nationals.
