NATO jets scramble as Russian drone spotted over Lithuania
Jets were scrambled in Poland after a Russian drone reportedly entered Lithuania. The drone, believed to have illegally entered from Putin’s ally Belarus, was detected near the capital Vilnius. Lithuanian Defense Minister suggested that the drone may have ended up in her country due to interference from Ukrainian air defense electronics warfare. This marks the second time this month that a Russian Drone is reported to have violated Lithuanian airspace from Belarus, potentially signaling an escalation to test NATO defenses. The public has been advised not to approach any fallen drones and to report them immediately by dialing the emergency number 112. In Warsaw, the Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces reported that fighter jets were deployed in response to Russia’s missile strikes on Ukraine. “Long-range aviation of the Russian Federation once again launched missile attacks on the territory of Ukraine” the commander noted.
Russia have just launched a ferocious attack on Ukraine
In response to this Russian aggression, NATO fighters were mobilized over Poland, which shares a border with Ukraine. Meanwhile, in neighboring Lithuania, a Russian drone was sighted in the NATO member country’s airspace, sparking a significant security alert around 5 am. The drone, believed to have illegally entered from Putin’s ally Belarus, was detected near the capital Vilnius. The drone initially seemed to be a Shahed-type uncrewed aircraft, a type Putin uses daily to cause devastating explosions in his war against Ukraine. Subsequent reports identified it as a Russian-made Gerbera drone with an eight-foot wingspan, designed to deceive air defense systems rather than cause explosions. Both models are Russian military drones; however, a final identification has not been made.

This marks the second time this month that a Russian drone is reported to have violated Lithuanian airspace from Belarus, potentially signaling an escalation to test NATO defenses. Despite the alert, Vilnius airport remained operational, according to reports. Law enforcement reported a sighting of an unidentified drone entering Lithuanian airspace from Belarus on the morning of July 28, according to a police statement. The public has been advised not to approach any fallen drones and to report them immediately by dialing the emergency number 112. The police shared that the drone was spotted at an altitude of about 200 meters (656ft), last seen near Vilnius. Darius Buta, from Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre, stated: “The police have mobilized all forces and all services have been informed.” He further urged residents who spot the drone to call 112 immediately and not to approach the device under any circumstances. Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovilė Šakalienė suggested that the drone may have ended up in her country due to interference from Ukrainian air defense electronics warfare. She noted: “Given the active actions of the Ukrainian defense to disorient Russian drones, the probability of lost drones remains increased”. Giedrimas Jeglinskas, head of the parliamentary committee on National Security and Defense, confirmed on LRT Radio: “As far as I understand, an [unmanned] aircraft was spotted invading Lithuania from Belarus.” A search for the drone is currently underway. In Warsaw, the Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces reported that fighter jets were deployed in response to Russia’s missile strikes on Ukraine. “long-range aviation of the Russian Federation once again launched missile attacks on the territory of Ukraine” the commander noted.
The military released a statement: “To ensure the safety of Polish airspace, the Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces has activated all necessary procedures.” It further detailed the defensive measures taken: “Polish and Allied duty aircraft have been scrambled, and ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems have reached the highest state of readiness.” The statement emphasized the protective intent of these actions: “These actions are preventive in nature and are aimed at securing the airspace and protecting citizens, especially in areas adjacent to the threatened region.” Visual evidence surfaced showing missile strikes, believed to be Kinzhal [Dagger] missiles, targeting the Starokostiantyniv air base in the Khmelnytskyi region, home to Ukraine’s tactical bomber force. The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, also suffered under the Russian offensive, with eight civilians injured in a residential building, including a three year old child. The attack left the sixth to the 11th floors of a tower in the Darnytskyi district severely damaged, marking another instance of civilian targeting as Putin ignores Donald Trump’s calls for peace negotiations. Additionally, a Russian drone strike targeted a passenger bus in the Sumy border region, resulting in three fatalities and 20 injuries. The casualties were identified as three female civilians, ages 66, 74, and 78.

Unfortunately, not all of them—there were also hits. “But we are constantly strengthening Ukraine’s air shield, and it is vital to maintain clear understanding among partners of how exactly they can help. Step by step, we are closing the funding gap for drone production, and I will be holding new talks with partners on this task later this week.
