After heavy rainfall caused waterlogging in various parts of the Capital on Wednesday evening, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Thursday convened a special meeting, expressing serious concern and dissatisfaction over the issue.

Issuing strict directives to department officials concerned, Gupta said immediate measures should be taken during rain to mitigate the problems caused by water accumulation, and instructed that stormwater drains along the roads be regularly inspected and cleared of blockages.

“Senior officers must visit these sites, ensure thorough cleaning, and check drainage systems to identify and resolve any obstructions that may lead to future water accumulation. Field staff responsibilities and accountability should be clearly defined to address both causes and lapses,” she said.

Gupta, however, expressed satisfaction that, despite the heavy rain, no waterlogging was reported this time at traditionally prone waterlogging zones like Minto Road and ITO junction and instructed the officials to demonstrate the same level of efficiency across the entire city.

“The government is aware of the public’s difficulties due to waterlogging,” she said.

She added that she had been receiving constant reports of traffic disruptions and prolonged travel times and emphasised that 24/7 monitoring by departments is important and that interdepartmental coordination is essential for a collective and effective response.

“Departments must work in unison to promptly tackle waterlogging and minimise its impact. Any negligence in dealing with waterlogging would not be tolerated,” she said.
