New Roadmap offers evidence-based strategy to futureproof the built environment

Buro Happold is proud to be a programme partner in the newly launched UK Climate Resilience Roadmap. The Roadmap is the first guidance of its kind to outline how the built environment can adapt to increasing climate hazards. It offers crucial insights on strategies to bolster climate resilience across the nation. It also provides a framework for embedding resilience into every stage of planning, design, construction and policy. The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has worked with Buro to develop this groundbreaking roadmap. It is based on cutting-edge research, modelling, and global insights. It provides a comprehensive, evidence-based strategy to help the built. environment sector respond to the growing risks posed by climate change and ensure resilience. It empowers the. built environment sector to move from reactive crisis reduction and long-term planning.

Buro Happold is proud to be a programme partner in the newly launched UK Climate Resilience Roadmap – the first guidance of its kind to outline how the built environment can adapt to increasing climate hazards, supported by the policies needed to drive this transformation. The UK Climate Resilience Roadmap offers crucial insights on strategies to bolster climate resilience across the nation.

Over the past two years, Buro Happold has worked in partnership with the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and in collaboration with leading industry experts to develop this groundbreaking roadmap. Drawing on cutting-edge research, modelling, and global insights, the UK Climate Resilience Roadmap provides a comprehensive, evidence-based strategy to help the built environment sector respond to the growing risks posed by climate change and ensure resilience.

A critical moment for climate action

The United Kingdom is already experiencing the impacts of climate change – flooding, overheating, wildfires, drought, and storms are becoming more frequent and severe. These hazards threaten lives, livelihoods, infrastructure and ecosystems. We need the UK Climate Resilience Roadmap because achieving climate resilience is no longer optional; it is essential.

The Roadmap sets out a clear, actionable vision for a climate-resilient built environment. It translates complex data and research into practical, scalable solutions tailored to the sector’s unique vulnerabilities. It also provides a framework for embedding resilience into every stage of planning, design, construction and policy.

Buro Happold’s role in shaping the Roadmap

As a programme partner, Buro Happold played a key role in shaping the Roadmap’s recommendations. Our experts led the development of guidance for organisations and project teams to better manage climate risk in built assets. This work builds on our extensive experience delivering climate adaptation strategies across the UK and globally – strategies that deliver both social and economic value.

Our Climate Resilience team is proud to have played a vital role in shaping and steering this significant industry project. Duncan Price, Global Sustainability and Climate Change Lead

Duncan Price, Global Sustainability and Climate Change Lead at Buro Happold, said:

“The Roadmap marks a huge step forward, setting out a comprehensive and cohesive approach for achieving a climate-resilient built environment that protects and enhances long-term value. Our Climate Resilience team is proud to have played a vital role in shaping and steering this significant industry project.”

Key messages from the Roadmap

Climate change is already costing lives and more will be lost without urgent action.

Five major hazards – storms, droughts, wildfires, overheating, and flooding – must be treated as national emergencies.

These hazards are interconnected, and our response must be systemic and coordinated.

Buildings are our frontline defence. Resilience starts with how we design, build, and adapt.

Acting now is the only responsible choice. Resilience must be embedded across every project and policy, forming a core part of the UK Climate Resilience Roadmap.

A vision for a resilient future

The Roadmap is more than a report – it’s a tool for bringing awareness and enabling action. It provides:

A strategic vision that supports both people and nature.

A systemic approach to embedding adaptation across all industry subsectors.

A flexible four-stage process aligned with metrics and indicators to guide decision-making.

National policy and industry recommendations aligned with sector-specific needs

By integrating climate adaptation with mitigation, the Roadmap promotes a holistic approach to sustainability – reducing emissions while enhancing resilience. It empowers the built environment sector to move from reactive crisis management to proactive risk reduction and long-term planning.
