VANCOUVER, BC – The Vancouver Whitecaps and the Portland Timbers renewed acquaintances on Wednesday night with the home side coming back to earn a late 1-1 draw.

On a cool fall evening, 20,212 fans were on hand at BC Place for a clash between the two Cascadian rivals. Canadian international, Kamal Miller, opened the scoring in the first half before Brian White came off the bench to score his team leading 15th MLS goal of the season.

White made his return to the pitch following a month on the sidelines as he worked his way through a hamstring injury. The 29 year-old received a huge cheer from the Vancouver faithful as he came on for rookie Rayan Elloumi in the 60th minute. Elloumi was starting up top in his first career MLS start.

The Whitecaps were able to create some chances of their own after White, Ali Ahmed, J.C. Ngando, and Daniel Rios came on as second half substitutes. White found the equalizer in the 88th minute off a set piece.

Sebastian Berhalter sent the ball into the Portland box off a corner kick, Mathias Laborda headed it towards goal, where White poked the ball past Canadian goalkeeper James Pantemis.

“It’s good to be back with the team,” White said post-game. “Obviously, it’s never easy being injured, so being away, not being able to train with the team (and) playing the games, is always tough. It’s good to be back out there and score a goal. Should have been two and three points, but we take what we get and move on to the next game.”

In a match where the Timbers dominated in the opening forty-five, the Oregonian visitors squandered three points. Portland remains in 7th spot in the Western Conference with an 11-10-10 record and 43 points. The Whitecaps slip to 16-6-8 on the campaign with 55 points.

The Whitecaps remain in second spot, one point behind San Diego with a game in hand.

Vancouver will have to wait a little longer if they are going to hoist their eighth Cascadia Cup. The Whitecaps will travel to Lumen Field to play the Seattle Sounders on Saturday night.

Whitecaps goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka was the star of the match. The MLS league leader in clean sheets made a number of spectacular saves to deny Portland. Timbers head coach Phil Neville felt that his team should have had a commanding lead after the first forty-five.

“I thought we should have been four-nil up at halftime.” Neville told reporters post-game in the bowels of BC Place. “I think it’s probably indicative of our season where we’ve not really punished teams. Four-nil up at halftime, I think we’ve had five clear one-v-one opportunities. We hit the post, the bar, and it should be a halftime where we’re thinking this game is over.

“At one-nil, the game is always going to change. No two halves are ever the same in football, and that proved in the second half. They changed the momentum of the game. We dropped our level of intensity and we were hanging on. Not taking responsibility, accountability, not passing the ball well, not possessing. It was a different game. I thought in the second half it was a poor performance from us.”

Upon learning of Neville’s “we should’ve been up four-nil at halftime” opinion, Jesper Sørensen gave credit to his goalkeeper for keeping Vancouver in the match when Portland pressed early on.

“I think Yohei did well,” Sørensen said. “I think they were better in the first half. I think four-nil probably would have been a lot, but okay. It’s not my business to say… whatever, how you see the game.

“Yohei kept us in it. We gave a lot of set plays and pieces away, especially corners in the beginning of the game that could have got them ahead. Of course, it was important that we were not further behind at halftime. That’s also why we have a keeper that’s allowed to take the ball with his hands. He can do that sometimes. He has been playing very well of late, Yohei.”

It was one way traffic in the opening forty-five as Portland created numerous scoring chances. Kristoffer Velde struck the post and moments later Ian Smith was racing in on goal. The Timbers were able to slice through the heart of the Whitecaps back line for clear cut opportunities on goal. Takaoka was peppered with five shots on target in the first 15 minutes of the match. Portland hemmed the Whitecaps in their own half for much of the first half.

“Our Achilles heel this season is not punishing teams with opportunities to score,” Neville said. “That cost us tonight and that’s disappointing. We’re playing against a Whitecaps team that haven’t conceded any goals all season. We’ve had four or five clear one v one opportunities and it’s disappointing.”

Kevin Kelsy had a brilliant scoring chance when his header forced Takaoka to leap up and knock the ball over the net for a Timbers corner in the 35th minute. Portland’s relentless first half attack earned them 10 corner kicks. The Timbers had 14 shot attempts and seven on target.

Miller would break the dead-lock in the 39th minute with a booming shot from 25 yards out. Kenji Cabrera was unable to clear the ball that fell to Miller and he delivered a cracker past Takaoka.

Miller’s goal snapped the Whitecaps’ streak of not allowing a goal across all competitions at 326 minutes.

“It was just a play where I tried to put myself in a good position thinking where the ball is going to land on their clearance,” Miller said postgame. “I intercepted the ball and I just hit it. Instinct moment, not really planned at all. I hit it well and I’m very thankful for the goal.”

For all the saves that Takaoka made in the first half, Portland would not be kept off the scoresheet. The Whitecaps had work to do as they trailed 1-0 heading into the interval.

Vancouver came close to scoring a go ahead goal in second half stoppage time when Emmanuel Sabbi sent a shot through a maze that struck the Timbers crossbar.

On an evening where Vancouver was missing nine players due to injury and suspension, the home side was able to weather an early Timbers barrage before coming back to rescue a point against one of their biggest MLS rivals. Portland just didn’t have enough finish.
