Nintendo is raising the price of the original Switch “family of systems and products,” the company announced on Friday. Along with the first-generation Nintendo Switch, the price change also affects the Switch OLED, Switch Lite, and “select” accessories.
Nintendo hasn’t confirmed what the new prices are, but, as pointed out by Wario64, Target’s website briefly showed a $40 price increase for the original Switch, putting it at $339.99. The site also listed the Switch OLED getting $50 more expensive at $399.99, while the Switch Lite was priced at $229.99, a $30 increase. Target now displays the original prices for the first-gen Switch family.
A previously announced price hike for the Switch 1 systems in Canada just took effect today, bumping the original Switch and Switch Lite prices by $20 CAD, to $419.99 and $279.99, respectively. The Switch 1 OLED price went up by $40 CAD, to $489.99.
The announcement says that Nintendo is also raising the price of some Switch 2 accessories, certain amiibo, and the Alarmo. The prices of Switch 2 consoles, as well as Switch and Switch 2 games (both physical and digital), aren’t changing.
Nintendo says it’s making the change “based on market conditions.”
The move comes just after President Donald Trump signed an executive order that will bombard more countries with tariffs. In 2019, Nintendo transferred most of its production away from China and into Vietnam to avoid tariffs, as noted by The New York Times. But now, Trump’s new round of levies will extend to Vietnam, too, with goods imported from the country facing a 20 percent fee.
Update, August 1st: Noted that Target has changed its Switch pricing.
Correction, August 1st: A previous version of the article incorrectly listed the Canadian price of the Switch OLED. It’s $489.99.
