Sen. Cory Booker delivered his second attention-grabbing floor speech of the year on July 29. While not a record-breaking marathon speech like the one he delivered March, this speech was what he referred to as a “wake-up call” for the Democratic Party.

The senior senator from New Jersey took aim at law firms, universities and even businesses that should be “bastions of free speech” but instead are “bending at the knee” to the Trump administration.

“What are the very people here, elected to defend the Constitution of the United States saying?” he asked. “Oh, well today let’s look the other way and pass some resources that won’t go to Connecticut, that won’t go to Illinois, that won’t go to New York, that will go to the states he likes.”

Booker called it “complicity with an authoritarian leader that’s trashing our Constitution.” He went on to say it’s time for Democrats to “have a backbone” and “fight.”

“I’m standing for Jersey. I’m standing for my police officers. I’m standing for the Constitution and I’m standing for what’s right,” he said.

The senator said there is too much on the line in the country and that if Democrats don’t stand together, they deserve to lose.
