NEW DELHI: Two students at a government school in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district say their warnings about falling debris were ignored minutes before the building’s roof collapsed, killing at least seven children and injuring 29 others.The incident occurred at around 7.45am on Friday at the Government Upper Primary School in Piplod village, when students were gathering for the morning prayer.“While we were sitting inside the classroom, stones started falling from the roof. Immediately, we informed our teacher, but what we said was ignored. Later, the roof collapsed,” one of the students told local reporters.Another student claimed the teacher dismissed their concerns. “We told the teacher something was wrong, but he said, nothing will happen, stay in class.”At least 17 students were inside the classroom for Classes 6 and 7 when the structure gave way, officials said.Many of them were buried under debris before a rescue operation was launched.“Four students were declared dead at the hospital. Eight others were injured, of whom two are in critical condition and have been referred to a higher medical centre,” said Nandkishore, a circle inspector from the Manhorethana police station.The school had a total strength of around 27 students.Police and emergency responders were quick to arrive at the site and all trapped students were rescued and taken to local hospitals, said SHO Vijendra Singh from Dangipura police station.
