On an outdoorsy adventure with friends, Parkland woman dies after being swept over waterfall
Lindsay Bashan, 33, of Parkland, Florida, and Amanda Lloyd, 40, of Rockwall, Texas, died. A man, whose name has not been released, remains missing, the Sheriff’s Office says. A total of six people were floating in innertubes that had been tied together on the Deschutes River. The group missed the last takeout area at Dillon Falls, an “extremely dangerous’ part of the river, authorities say. The trip had begun two days before the accident, and the group spent Friday hiking and Saturday on the river.“This vacation was an adventure she was doing with her good friends,” Vivian Bashan said.
A total of six people were floating in innertubes that had been tied together on the Deschutes River when they missed the last takeout area at Dillon Falls, an “extremely dangerous” part of the river, shortly before 3 p.m., the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Tuesday.
Three people were able to jump from the tubes and onto shore, the Sheriff’s Office said. The three others were swept over the waterfall and into the main rapids. The section of the river is a Class 5 Rapid with a 15-foot drop and rocks, logs and debris.
Lindsay Bashan, 33, of Parkland, and Amanda Lloyd, 40, of Rockwall, Texas, were identified Tuesday as those who died. A man, whose name has not been released, remains missing, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Bashan and the five others in the group were friends on vacation, staying in an Airbnb together, her parents Vivian Bashan and Todd Bashan told the South Florida Sun Sentinel on Tuesday night. The trip had begun two days before the accident. They spent Friday hiking and Saturday on the river.
The Bashans said their daughter had met the others who were on the trip with her in 2023 when they all participated in a now-defunct organization called Remote Year, where professionals working remotely traveled in a group to a different country every month. Bashan and 25 other people, all initially strangers with different backgrounds and professions, spent time in 12 different countries and grew to be friends.
“This vacation was an adventure she was doing with her good friends,” Vivian Bashan said. “They were just going to do all these great outdoor things, hiking and going on the river. And at least they had the first day …”
Bashan graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and Florida State University. She was getting ready to start a new job next week in New York City, her mother and father said.
Her father described her as an adventurous person who was “into anything and everything” with a penchant for eating healthy and exercising. From the time she was a girl, Bashan was full of energy, her mother said.
“She was just a bright, friendly, thoughtful person,” Vivian Bashan said. “And everyone that we’ve told what happened, all her friends are just saying how much they loved her and what an amazing friend she was. She was a good friend to all of them.”
Search efforts were still underway late Tuesday for the missing person, with a diver onboard an aircraft flying over the area to survey while Portland Police Bureau flew another aircraft with specialized cameras, the Sheriff’s Office said. A K9 team was also searching.
If the missing person is not found by Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office said sonar equipment will be brought in to help with deeper underwater searches.
