One of the Lorain Police officers who was shot in ambush has died
Lorain police officer Phillip Wagner died after being shot during an ambush. Wagner was known for his professionalism, dedication and compassion, police say. Wagner previously served in the Sheffield Village Police Department and the U.S. Marine Corps. He joined the Lorain PD in February of 2022 and earned his SWAT pin two days ago, police said.
“Officer Wagner’s life and service to our city will never be forgotten,” said Chief Michael Failing. “On behalf of the Wagner family, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who has reached out in support. Our department mourns the loss of a true hero and stands in unwavering support of Officer Wagner’s family, friends, and fellow officers during this heartbreaking time. We ask the community to keep his loved ones in their thoughts and prayers as we come together to honor his memory, service, and ultimate sacrifice.”

According to police training records, Wagner previously served in the Sheffield Village Police Department. He also served in the United States Marine Corps.

The department said Wagner was a “respected and beloved member” of its law enforcement family since the beginning of his career. He was known for his professionalism, dedication and compassion.
LPD stated that Wagner proudly served in law enforcement for seven years, and two days ago, he earned his SWAT pin after a year of hard work and dedicated training.
Lorain Police said information regarding funeral arrangements and opportunities for public remembrance will be released in the days to come.
He joined the Lorain PD in February of 2022.

Lorain Police Officer Dies From Ambush
Lorain Police Officer Phillip Wagner (35) died Thursday from injuries sustained in an ambush shooting Wednesday afternoon. Wagner and his partner, Officer Peter Gale, 51, were splitting a pizza on their lunch break around 1 p.m. when police said the suspect, Michael Parker (28) of Lorain ambushed them with a high-powered rifle. According to the Elyria Police Department, officers returned fire during the exchange, which ultimately resulted in Parker sustaining a fatal injury.
Wagner was a 3-year veteran of the Lorain Police Department. He graduated from the police academy in 2018 and went on to work with the Sheffield Village Police.
He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Wagner was pronounced deceased at MetroHealth Medical Center, where he had been receiving treatment for critical injuries.
Wagner and his partner, Officer Peter Gale, 51, were splitting a pizza on their lunch break around 1 p.m. when police said the suspect, Michael Parker (28) of Lorain ambushed them with a high-powered rifle.
Lorain Police Officer Brent Payne (47) rushed to help on the scene wasn’t also shot.

Parker was pronounced dead at the scene after the shooting. According to the Elyria Police Department, officers returned fire during the exchange, which ultimately resulted in Parker sustaining a fatal injury.

Officer Payne is listed in critical condition at MetroHealth in Cleveland.
Officer Gale was taken to Mercy Medical with a gunshot wound to the hand.
