ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The first weekend following a deadly shooting at the Gaslight Lounge in Anchorage has come and gone. Downtown bar owners told Alaska’s News Source that new policing measures helped keep things quiet on Fourth Avenue.

Gaslight Lounge owner John Pattee said he was in favor of the changes that the Anchorage Police Department made the week prior.

On Monday, Pattee said the weekend went smoothly, thanks in part to the new police procedures.

“Everything went fine, didn’t have any problems,” Pattee said. “The police were out in the back, guarding that empty lot and they were also — there were several in the front. They mainly stayed across the street.

“They bagged all the meters on both sides and the police, they did a good job. When someone tried to park, they would come up to the car and ask them to move along and so the front area was pretty empty.”

The shooting was the result of activity out in front of the Gaslight, according to security footage. Pattee said the shooter had not been inside the bar, so having fewer people congregating outside helps keep the peace.

The shooting left 23-year-old Leroy Manogiamanu dead and three others with injuries.

APD said there were two calls over the weekend in that area, both of which were for fighting.

Anchorage to see increased police presence downtown following fatal bar break shooting

The Anchorage Police Department is doubling its police presence on the 700th block of Fourth Avenue. The increased presence comes after a man was killed and three others were injured during a shooting across the street from the police department. Half of those officers, APD said, will be located on the back side of 4th Avenue, and the other four in front. The department hopes the additional police presence can help prevent people from congregating in front of establishments on the street. It also warned that delayed response times could occur in other parts of the city due to the increased presence downtown. The case from the weekend remains a homicide investigation, and police expect the investigation to wrap up shortly.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The Anchorage Police Department said Wednesday that it is doubling its police presence on the 700th block of Fourth Avenue in downtown Anchorage following a fatal shooting over the weekend.

“I would say that the calls for service between midnight and four in the morning on this particular block are higher than what we see in other any area of Anchorage,” APD Chief Sean Case said Wednesday.

Starting this weekend, the department told Alaska’s News Source that it will be increasing its presence around the block from four officers to eight. Half of those officers, APD said, will be located on the back side of Fourth Avenue, and the other four in front.

Anchorage Police Department (APD) is doubling its police presence on the 700th block of 4th Avenue, in downtown Anchorage.

The hope is that this can help manage how people are entering and leaving the area.

“You’re going to see cover up [of] the parking meters earlier in the evening, about 10 p.m., so that will cause there to be no parking on 4th Avenue, on the 700-block, on both sides of the street,” Case said. “Then, about that bar break time — about that 90-minute time period — we’ll have the block blocked by patrol cars. So, there won’t be any vehicles coming and going in the 700 block.”

The increased presence comes after a man was killed and three others were injured during a shooting across the street from the police department.

Security footage obtained from Gaslight Lounge shows a shooter — who APD has identified as 23-year-old Leroy Manogiaman — firing into a crowd of people.

Two Gaslight Lounge security guards were injured during the shooting. Manogiaman was fatally shot and killed by another Gaslight security staff member during the confrontation.

According to Case, it took his team less than a minute to respond to the shooting on Sunday morning.

Case told Alaska’s News Source that the department hopes the additional police presence can help prevent people from congregating in front of establishments on the street.

This is part of an initiative the department began several weeks ago, he said, positioning officers around the block to reduce criminal activity.

The fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday prompted the decision to expand the initiative, Case said.

“Generally, we found that two officers wasn’t enough to kind of manage the flow of people,” Case said. “So last week, we had all four at the rear.”

Case told Alaska’s News Source that the additional police presence does decrease activity, but officers do encounter people who are intoxicated and tend to be more confrontational to officers.

APD also warned that delayed response times could occur in other parts of the city due to the increased presence downtown.

Case added that the case from the weekend remains a homicide investigation. He said he expects the investigation to wrap up shortly.

Following deadly shooting, Downtown Anchorage to see increased police presence

The measures are part of a new initiative that APD and local businesses were already in the process of developing, months prior. Police Chief Sean Case said that some of the measures are temporary, but will remain for “the next several weeks,” though he did not give an exact time frame. Several of the businesses on and around the block say they were supportive of the new measures.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Following last week’s fatal shooting at the Gaslight Lounge, increased security measures will begin Friday night (July 25) on 4th Avenue.

Earlier in the week, the Anchorage Police Department announced that they would be doubling the number of officers, bagging parking meters, and running extra patrols.

According to Police Chief Sean Case, the measures are part of a new initiative that APD and local businesses were already in the process of developing, months prior.

Beginning at 10 p.m., parking meters along 4th Avenue, between G and H Street, will be bagged, and anyone who parks there could be towed.

APD said they have also assigned eight officers to the block, as opposed to the usual four, and around the time most bars close, they will be running extra patrols on the street, as well as behind the Gaslight Lounge.

Case said that some of the measures are temporary, but will remain for “the next several weeks,” though he did not give an exact time frame.

When asked on Friday, several of the businesses on and around the block say they were supportive of the new measures, and hope it prevents further crime in the area, like last week’s shooting.

The victim who died was identified as 23-year-old Leroy Manogiamanu.

When officers responded to reports of shots fired early Sunday morning on Fourth Avenue outside the Gaslight Lounge, they found three victims, including Manogiamanu and another person with “life-threatening injuries,” APD said.

Police said a fourth person with “non-life-threatening injuries” was later found.

Security footage from the Gaslight Lounge shows the shooter never entered the bar before Gaslight security staff confronted the gunman outside.

The bar owner, John Pattee, said two of his security guards were struck when the gunman opened fire around 2:50 a.m. Sunday.

A third security guard, according to Pattee, retrieved a weapon from his car and shot the suspect.

“He confronted the guy that was about to shoot other people,” Pattee explained, adding that his employee’s action may have saved lives.

“There’s a small group of criminals that are victimizing my clientele and my staff and my business,” Pattee said. “In this particular instance … all of us feel like we’re as much of a victim as my two guys that got shot.”

The shooting suspect has not yet been publicly identified.

The department asked anyone with information on the situation or surveillance video to contact Police Dispatch at 311 (option #1) or 907 786-8900 (option #0).

APD is investigating the case as a homicide.
