The Boston Red Sox have already made one franchise-altering decision this season by choosing to trade third baseman Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. At least one person believes they should be ready to make another. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com recently reported that one rival executive believes Boston should make a trade for Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins.

“What the general public never factors into their knee-jerk trade reactions is what the teams trading away the large contract can now go do with those dollars,” an NL executive said hours after the trade. “Boston should go trade for someone like [Brewers first baseman] Rhys Hoskins right now. Then the deal takes on a whole new dimension.”

Boston has newfound flexibility after moving Devers, and since they are in the hunt for an American League Wild Card spot, they may be willing to make another splash sooner rather than later.

“I think we’re absolutely going to look at the best use of those resources [from financial flexibility created by the Devers trade] and could put them to use as early as the 2025 Trade Deadline,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said earlier this week.

Schematically, Hoskins would fit the Red Sox perfectly. The club signed All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman shortly before the start of Spring Training. Additionally, first baseman Triston Casas is out for the year with a left patellar tendon rupture.

Adding Hoskins would instantly fill an important vacancy. The 32-year-old has hit 11 home runs, 38 RBIs across 71 games this season. He has mashed 185 career home runs and has also earned an .821 lifetime OPS. Further, he was a pivotal part of the Philadelphia Phillies’ run to the World Series in 2022.

If Boston is searching for a player who can immediately contribute to a winning effort, Hoskins has already proven that he can succeed under intense circumstances. But, it remains to be seen whether or not the Red Sox will look to make such a significant swing on a player who will likely be a free agent at the end of the season.

Of all of the teams who could make a splash at the MLB trade deadline, the Detroit Tigers are likely at the top of the list. With a need in the outfield, starting rotation, bullpen, and at third base, there are plenty of stars the team could add at the deadline.

But one move would be a dream scenario for the Tigers. Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report proposed a trade for the Tigers that would land Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman. In return, Rymer has Detroit giving up Alex Cobb and Josue Briceno.

“In reuniting with former Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch,” Rymer writes, “Bregman could also further heighten the Tigers’ credibility as a winner. Not that they need it at this point, but sometimes too much of a good thing is for the best.”

Landing Bregman would be a massive move for the Tigers to make. He’d immediately improve the offense and significantly improve the defense. He’d not only make the Tigers World Series contenders, but could even make them the favorites in the AL.

And, if the proposal Rymer made were to be what the tigers give up, it’d be a major coup. While Briceno is the fourth-ranked Tigers prospect, he isn’t projected to make his MLB debut until 2027. Moving on from him for Bregman would be more than worth it.

Also, moving off Cobb would be a great move for Detroit. He’s recovering from a hip injury at the moment, and at 37 years old and costing $15 million in 2025, the Tigers would do well to get off his contract.

While he is a solid starter, moving on from him would free up some money and also open the door to adding a starter in a separate deal at the trade deadline. If the Tigers could land Bregman, and at the cost of their fourth-ranked prospect and Cobb, it’d be an easy deal to make.

Even if Bregman decides to opt out after 2025, it’d still be worth putting together a World Series-contending team this season. Bregman on the Tigers is a perfect fit, and this trade proposal would be a dream scenario in Detroit.

Trade rumors are beginning to heat up in the MLB. As always, the Padres’ general manager, AJ Preller, is hoping to make a big-time splash. Dennis Lin of The Athletic reported that “the Padres are again showing interest in Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran.” With the Red Sox having the top prospect in baseball, Roman Anthony, ready for the call-up to the big leagues, this trade could be beneficial for both sides.

How Good is Jarren Duran?

After flashing his potential in 2023, Duran exploded into stardom last season, finishing 7th in the MLB in fWAR (wins above replacement). He was an All-Star and posted a .834 OPS with 21 home runs. On top of that, he was elite in every category; his hitting, baserunning, and fielding run values are ranked above the 90th percentile in the MLB. Duran was, by every means, a superstar last year.

This year, however, has started differently for Duran. His OPS is down by over 100 points, with his issues mainly stemming from a significant lack of power. He only has four home runs so far and is barrelling the ball in the 45th percentile compared to last season’s 63rd percentile. While his numbers are not what fans were expecting, it’s early in the season, and Duran can still easily put up spectacular numbers this season.

Cost to Acquire Him

While these rumors are incredibly intriguing for the Padres, the price to pull off a deal would be difficult. Duran is a high-caliber player, and he has a ton of control. The outfielder won’t be out of arbitration until after the 2028 season. If this potential deal were to go through, it would be an absolute blockbuster.

There’s no doubt that the Padres would have to give up significant prospect capital. Anyone not named Leo De Vries would be on the table for this trade. The problem is that the Red Sox may only be willing to do it for him. De Vries is only 18 years old and is the #3 overall prospect in the entire MLB. It doesn’t seem like the Padres would want to part with this potential superstar.

Outside of De Vries, the Padres’ second-ranked player in their farm system is Ethan Salas, who is the only other player with over a 50 grade. The problem is that he struggled heavily last season and again this year before being placed on the injured list. The Friars also have multiple 50-grade pitching prospects, including Kash Mayfield, Boston Bateman, and Humberto Cruz. It seems like the only deal that could work would consist of Ethan Salas and multiple pitching prospects.

Odds of the Trade Happening

So many rumors pop up, but never come to fruition. Still, this trade makes a lot of sense. The Padres desperately need a left fielder and have shown in the past that they are willing to part with high-quality prospect capital. On the other hand, the Red Sox have been one of the most disappointing teams in the MLB this year. Outfield prospect Roman Anthony may be who the Red Sox view as their Left Fielder of the future. This trade makes sense for both sides, it will just depend on whether or not the prospect capital lines up for both teams. Stay tuned, these rumors appear to be very legitimate.

San Diego currently holds a record of 47-41 on the season, but they are currently eight games behind Los Angeles for the division lead. The Padres are competing for a wild-card playoff spot, and they still believe they can win it all.

But one way to make that happen is to be active at the trade deadline that is quickly approaching. And it seems that San Diego is expected to do just that.

According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the San Diego Padres may be preparing to make some big moves at the trade deadline.

“The Padres are spreading the word to every seller that they are searching for a right-handed hitting outfielder and a catcher, and aren’t afraid to deal their prospects. They still believe they have the team to end their World Series drought, particularly with Yu Darvish’s imminent return and potentially Michael King’s shortly after the All-Star break,” Nightengale wrote.

San Diego has a lot of talent on the roster, but injuries have hurt them this year. But if they can add to this team, they could be a very tough out come playoff time.

For the first few months of the year, the Seattle Mariners were in the driver’s seat of the AL West. As recently as June 2nd, they were still at the top of the division.

But now that the month is coming to a close, their aspirations of winning the division for the first time in 24 years seem slim. With the Houston Astros 6.5 games ahead, FanGraphs gives the Mariners just a 13.1 percent chance to end the season in first place.

However, that doesn’t mean that they’re out of the postseason picture just yet. The Mariners still occupy one of the three coveted AL Wild Card spots and FanGraphs is giving them a near 60 percent chance to make it to October, a better chance than other noted contenders like the San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers, and San Diego Padres.

Thus, it only makes sense that they’re poised to be buyers at this year’s trade deadline and if some sources are to believed, they might actually be one of the biggest spenders.

Jerry Dipoto wants roster upgrades and Mariners ownership is willing to spend

In a recent Reddit AMA, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reported that not only do the Mariners have an excess of alluring prospect talent, but that ownership has allegedly approved an increase in spending for the second half of the season, clearing one of the biggest obstacles that could have significantly impeded the team.

The bigger uncertainty is less about what they need and more about what they’ll end up with. Unlike in years past, there aren’t any many options that are both available and able to make a real impact on a team’s playoff chances. Marquee players that are set to hit free agency this offseason like Kyle Tucker, Framber Valdez, Ranger Suárez, and Paul Goldschmidt are all on contending rosters.

Nonetheless, there are still some upgrades the team can make. In terms of what positions they’re specifically aiming to bolster, Kramer reported that the front office, led by president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto, is looking for more offensive production from the corner infielders and another high-leverage arm for the bullpen.

The call for help at first and third base shouldn’t be surprising, as the team has been lacking in those areas all year. In the hot corner, Ben Williamson’s has a 78 OPS+ and Miles Mastrobuoni has a 89 OPS+, hardly groundbreaking numbers. At first base, Donovan Solano has been on a tear this month, posting a 1.133 OPS, but he hasn’t exactly been a model of consistency at the plate and is still limited in his effectiveness against left-handed pitchers. In the bullpen, it has been a revolving door outside of the five core arms in Eduard Bazardo, Carlos Vargas, Gabe Speier, Andrés Muñoz, and Matt Brash.

Given the criteria, there are still some potential trades to be made. Kramer called out the Baltimore Orioles and Arizona Diamondbacks as the teams to watch in particular and other teams could the keys to an improved offense or a more effective relief unit. The increase in spending boosts the organization’s optionality even further, possibly opening the door to pricier names like Eugenio Suárez and even Alex Bregman.

Teams are reported as “ready to make a splash” every trade deadline, but the Mariners do have a recent history of making impactful moves. Last year, they fell just short of the big dance but this year, they might just take enough of a risk to course correct back onto the road of perennial postseason contention.
