A person was killed after a car caught fire near the South Philadelphia Sports Complex Saturday evening, an official confirmed with NBC10.

The vehicle caught fire in the westbound lanes of I-76 near the sports complex and approaching the Walt Whitman Bridge shortly before 6 p.m., according to a Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) spokesperson. First responders were able to bring the flames under control. The DRPA spokesperson said one person died during the incident. He did not reveal further details on the victim or the cause of the fire.

The fire caused delays with traffic being detoured on the Philadelphia side of the Walt Whitman Bridge onto I-95 at Front Street. Those detours ended around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
