FAQs
What makes great pet insurance?
A great pet insurance policy is one that is right for your financial needs and the health needs of your pet,” stated Dr. Bledsoe. “If you decide that pet insurance is right for you and your pet, don’t wait to purchase a policy. Pet insurance can benefit your pet at every life stage. Start researching policies once you have an idea of what type of coverage you need for your pet and how much you would like to pay.
“Speaking to a licensed representative who can have a conversation about pet insurance is the best way to answer all your questions along with reviewing the information provided online from the company’s website.
“There are many options out there, but when it comes to CarePlus by Chewy, pet parents have the option to select wellness and insurance plans provided by Trupanion or Lemonade. The most important thing is to review the various options carefully and consider what’s right for you and your pet!
“The first step to buying pet insurance is to know what you need. A great place to start is by asking yourself the following questions:
Is my pet young and healthy, or getting to an age where health problems start to develop?
Has my pet been diagnosed with any underlying health conditions? Do they take any current medications? Is my pet’s breed prone to certain health conditions?
What’s my budget for pet insurance? How much can I afford each month?
How much can I afford to spend out of pocket in a health emergency if you had to meet a higher deductible?”
According to Dr. Richardson, who “would define ‘great’ pet insurance as including comprehensive coverage, flexible plans, and a solid record of excellent customer service,” some key features to look for are…
“Comprehensive Coverage: Covers accidents, illnesses, hereditary conditions (important if you have a pure breed!), chronic conditions, and emergency care.
High Reimbursement Rates: A higher percentage of vet bills covered, ideally 80-90%.
No or Low Deductibles: Lower out-of-pocket costs before insurance kicks in.
Fast Claims Processing: Quick, low-stress claim reimbursement process with minimal bartering. Some insurance companies will even pay your vet directly (Trupanion).
Lifetime Coverage: No limits on payouts over the pet’s lifetime. This is an important one if you have a pet that suffers from any chronic illness!
No Exclusions for Breed-Specific Conditions: Covers conditions that are common in specific breeds.”
Why is having pet insurance important?
Peace of mind: According to Dr. Bledsoe, “When surveying Chewy customers about why they choose pet insurance, those who have a wellness or insurance plan cite the top reason is peace of mind — almost half (48%) of survey respondents agreed that is the primary reason for purchasing pet insurance is knowing they can take care of their pets if something happens to them.

Financial stability : “People who opt for pet insurance have weighed the risks of waiting for a multi-thousand-dollar medical event against the average monthly cost for pet insurance (which is around $30 for cats and $50 for dogs), and budgeted accordingly. With CarePlus by Chewy, there are options that work for everyone’s budget and give pet parents the confidence that the coverage is there if and when they need it. According to Dr. Richardson, “Having insurance reduces the financial stress on pet owners when having to make treatment options, especially for unexpected emergencies or major surgeries. It can provide peace of mind knowing that your pet is covered and allows you to focus on their health.”

It can provide peace of mind knowing that your pet is covered and allows you to focus on their health.” Highest quality care: “When a pet parent already has insurance, veterinarians can deliver necessary care without compromises or having to worry about the customer’s ability to afford it,” says Dr. Bledsoe. “When veterinarians are working with people in financial distress, they run many risks including less preventative care upfront, not to mention debt, competing client loads, and the emotional challenges that come with that territory.” According to Dr. Richardson, “insurance can enable you to opt for more advanced or extensive treatment options.”
“It’s a great idea for puppy and kitten owners to look into pet insurance, continued Dr. Bledsoe. “After all, the first year of a pet’s life can be quite expensive with vaccinations, check-ups, spay/neuter procedures, fecal testing, etc. — and that’s just for wellness! If anything were to go wrong — for example, orthopedic issues like hip dysplasia, overzealous chewers swallowing toys, kittens chewing on electrical cords — then at least you can be covered for any diagnostics, treatments or surgeries that may be required.
“In adulthood, different breeds age at different paces. Large breed dogs age much faster than smaller breeds, so a two-year-old Irish Wolfhound may have significantly different needs than a two-year-old Chihuahua. Getting pet insurance early on in your pet’s life allows you to provide the highest quality care possible for your young pet, which may just help them age more gracefully.
“Many pet parents have a pet savings account, and others rely on credit lines such as CareCredit or ScratchPay in more expensive situations. However, pet insurance may be much more affordable than many pet parents think (especially when compared with human health policies), so make sure you check out different policies before you decide against insurance.”
What is the difference between wellness and insurance plans?
“Most providers offer a unique selection of pet wellness and insurance plans, which you can buy standalone or together (coverage by state may vary),” commented Dr. Bledsoe.
“Insurance plans are designed to help in the event of accidents and illnesses. These plans cover new, unexpected healthcare needs from accidents to illnesses. Coverage can include surgeries, X-rays, medications, fees related to hospitalizations, and more. To make sure you get the most out of your coverage, it’s best to enroll in a pet insurance plan when your pet is young and healthy. If they get injured or sick before they are covered, treatments related to these issues would not be covered, since those conditions would be considered pre-existing.
“Wellness plans are affordable, annual packages designed to cover preventative care for your pet. These plans can help you cover your pet’s annual veterinary exam fee, vaccines, lab tests (e.g., annual heartworm test), dental cleaning, spay neutering, and flea, tick, and heartworm medications.”
Can you provide a brief description of CarePlus and how it works with Trupanion and Lemonade?
“We partnered with Trupanion and Lemonade to offer leading pet insurance and wellness plans on the market exclusively for Chewy customers,” said Dr. Bledsoe. “We want you to understand the parties involved in offering these plans for you and your pet.”
Here’s a breakdown of CarePlus’s partnerships and how they work together:

Lemonade Insurance Company or Metromile Insurance Company are the underwriters for Lemonade that issue the wellness and insurance plans and are responsible for collecting your monthly premium and paying customer claims.”
Are there any discounts available if you bundle Wellness and Insurance plans with CarePlus?
According to Dr. Bledsoe, the answer is “yes, which partner you choose determines the type of discounts available for your eligible pet.” For example:
Trupanion multipet: if you insure 2 or more pets with a Trupanion plan, you’ll receive a 10% discount on your monthly premium for all pets (inclusive of wellness and Insurance plans).
Lemonade multipet: if you insure 2 or more pets with a Lemonade plan, you’ll receive a 5% discount on your monthly premium for all pets (the discount only applies to the Accident & Illness portion of your policy).

Lemonade annual discount: if you choose to pay for a whole year of Lemonade pet insurance upfront, you will receive a 5% discount.”

MARKET DYNAMICS
Market Drivers
High Spending on Pet Care to Favor Market Growth
Increased investment in pet products, including food, healthcare products, pet insurance products, grooming products, and others, drives the global pet care market growth. In addition, several factors, including growing infrastructural facilities, disposable incomes, and increasing pet ownership rate, are likely to propel the product consumption rate worldwide. According to the Center for Animal Nutrition and Welfare in Russia, in 2023, the total number of pets in Russia increased to 74.8 million, 11% up from 2020.
Owning a pet is taken to be an important sign among high-class societies, which will foster the demand for pet care products in the long run. Besides, increased spending on pet care products incentivizes companies to diversify their product lines and introduce innovative solutions to address various aspects of pet care, such as nutrition, grooming, health, and wellness. This expansion of product offerings will attract more consumers and further stimulate the product’s demand within the market.
Initiatives for Advanced Pet Care Products to Support Market Growth
Companies implement various initiatives to develop technologically-enabled animal care products for global customers. Their consistent product innovation focus supports the development of innovative animal care products such as location tracker devices, cardboard pet feeder devices, smart laser cat toys, and others, thereby driving the market growth. For instance, in November 2024, HugWith, an animal grooming products brand, launched animal hygiene glove wipes of a biodegradable glove-shaped design in the American market.
Market Restraints
Higher Cost of High-Quality Products to Restrain Market Growth
The higher cost of high-quality pet care products is expected to limit their demand among the lower-income population. Additionally, uncertain incidences of animal-borne diseases, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, and others, due to pets’ unhygienic living practices, are anticipated to restrain market growth. Besides, uncertain associations and governmental regulations regarding product labelling and promotion are expected to hamper the company’s revenues.
Market Opportunities
Eco-friendly Pet Product Shopping to Create Newer Market Growth Opportunities
Increasing eco-conscious consumers’ preference for biodegradable pet hygiene waste bags and sustainable food items will create newer business growth opportunities for manufacturers & retailers in the sustainable pet product industry. In addition, a growing number of manufacturers adhering to the environmental concerns of their production process and shifting toward producing eco-friendly material-based products create newer market growth opportunities.
Market Challenges
Higher R&D Investment Necessities to Challenge Market Players Introducing New Products
The higher R&D investment necessities, including the development of patented formulations for animal food items, pose challenges to the market players launching new products and building market positions. In addition, the increasing bargaining power of suppliers and disruption in the global supply chain due to incidences of war & natural calamities challenge key players to conduct international business expansion activities.
Pet Care Market Trends
Shifting Inclination Toward Dietary Food Items to Accelerate Market Expansion
Nowadays, pet owners prefer dietary food items to avoid obesity & unexpected weight loss issues among their pets. Therefore, the higher prevalence of obesity among pet dogs & cats is expected to increase dietary food products demand, offering newer industry growth opportunities. According to the study conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP), in 2023, pet obesity prevalence in the U.S. reached 61% for cats and 59% for dogs. In addition, shifting animal owner trends toward feeding plant-based food items to their pets will further drive the demand for vegan food items, supporting market growth.

This included increased spending on pet food, treats, toys, grooming products, and veterinary care as pet owners prioritized their pets’ well-being.
SEGMENTATION ANALYSIS
By Product Type
Significant Necessities of Nutritious Food Items Allow Pet Food Products to Dominate
By product type, the market is divided into pet food products, veterinary care, and others. The largest share of the pet food products segment is attributed to the tremendous demand for tasty and nutritious food items for their daily feeding needs among owners. According to the data presented by the European Pet Food Industry Association (FEDIAF), in 2024, European pet food products’ sales in terms of volume and value reached 9.9 million tons and USD 31.50 billion, respectively. Additionally, the easy accessibility of a variety of animal food items results in a more significant revenue generation from this segment.
Pet food products segment is further sub-segmented into dry, wet, and treats. The dry segment exhibited a major market share due to the higher consumption of nutritious, dry dog and dry cat food items across many countries. According to the survey conducted over 2181 American pet owners by the National Library of Medicine, National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), 85.8% of them prefer buying dry food items, 63.5% prefer buying packaged treats, and 51.9% prefer buying canned food items. The wet segment is mainly driven by increasing demand for natural and functional wet food items. The growing popularity of buying packaged treats of different shapes and sizes with the required nutritional value supports the treats segmental growth.
The faster growth of the veterinary care segment is attributed to the growing animal veterinary care-related commercial settings in many countries worldwide. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), U.S. pet veterinary services costs increased by more than 7.5% from September 2022 to September 2023. Additionally, growing awareness regarding health care and hygiene among worldwide animal owners will further drive segmental growth.

Healthy Nature of Dogs to Augment Dog Segment Revenue
Based on pet type, the market is classified into dog, cat, and others.
The dog segment holds the highest share of the market, owing to the healthy and happier nature of dogs. Besides, residents can prevent house robberies by keeping a well-trained canine pet. This will likely ease the dogs’ humanization rate among households, driving segmental growth.
The cat sement is expected to grow considerably because of rising online sales of cat care products from various prominent e-commerce sites such as Amazon, Walmart, and others. According to the surveyed data presented by the American Pet Products Association, in 2022, 70% of U.S. households owned some pet, an increase from 67% in 2020. Additionally, the growing popularity of litter boxes for cat hygiene purposes further drives segmental growth.
The others segment, including various animals, such as reptiles, turtles, freshwater & saltwater fishes, birds, horses, and small animals, are primarily driven by the growing awareness regarding the availability of various animal care products to the global population. Additionally, rising aquaculture trends among the fisherman population will further drive segmental revenues.
By Distribution Channel
Wide Availability of Products at Pet Stores Help Offline Channel to Hold Majority Stake
Based on distribution channel, the market is bifurcated into online and offline.
The offline segment, including the pet stores and supermarkets, is expected to exhibit the largest pet care market share due to the availability of various pet supplies at these stores. Additionally, growing infrastructural settings related to pet stores are further likely to support the pet products’ consumption rate from these stores.
The fastest growth of the online segment is attributed to the growing popularity of online subscription-based services related to animal food products among pet owners worldwide. This will fuel online product sales from subscription-based pet services, driving segmental growth. Nowadays, companies can effectively track the different categories of pet products’ sales performance from their e-commerce stores. Moreover, the rising middle-class population in the region is likely to support market growth.
Europe
Europe is expected to grow considerably for the global pet care market due to the significant presence of infrastructural settings related to pet stores and veterinarians. This is likely to provide ease in supplying a bulk volume of animal accessories and food items to pet owners, thereby supporting the market growth.
Additionally, the significant number of pet cats among households in Portugal, Germany, and France results in a more significant consumption rate of cat food items among such families. According to data presented by the European Pet Food Industry Federation, in 2021, Germany became the country with the second-highest pet cat population with 16,700,00 pet cats and the third-highest pet dog population with 10,300,000 dogs in Europe.
South America
A considerable share of the South American region is attributed to the significant presence of aquaculture-related production facilities in Brazil and Chile, resulting in the more enormous revenues of fish food products from such facilities. According to the data presented by the National Union of the Animal Health Products Industry in Brazil in 2023, Brazil has the third-largest pet population in the world, with 149.6 billion pets in 2022. Brazil imports a variety of pet food products from major countries such as China, U.K., Germany, U.S. and others around the world which drive product retail sales in the country.
Middle East & Africa
The growing awareness regarding hygiene and cleanliness among the Middle East & African population is likely to drive the demand for dog and cat tissues, cat litter, pet deodorizers, and other pet hygiene and grooming-related items. Furthermore, an increasing number of cat owners preferring premium wet food items drive the region’s market growth.

Bell and Bone: Vet endorsed dental treats for dogs and cats
80% of dogs and 70% of cats suffer from dental disease by the age of three. Bell and Bone has released a first-of-its-kind Dental Topper Spray for dogs and cats, and in five flavours – Beef, Lamb, Salmon, Tuna and Chicken. It aims to promote dental halth, digestion and immunity by reducing inflamation in the gut. The easy-to-use topper is vet-approved and picky eater-approved. Arianne Sackville, 36, became entranced by the world of pet health once her dog, Louie, came into the picture. She launched the Melbourne-based pet brand in 2018. Just one-week out from the Melbourne Covid lockdown in March 2020, the brand quickly became a household household essential for many pet owners. It is available in Australia and New Zealand, as well as the UK and the US. For more information, visitbellandbone.com.au or go to their Facebook page.
But what if we asked the same question to your dog or cat? If they could talk, would they say daily, every other day, once a week or never?
Dental hygiene is arguably one of the most overlooked aspects when it comes to raising a pet – 80 per cent of dogs and 70 per cent of cats suffer from dental disease by the age of three. Shocking, right?
This is partly due to pet owners not taking action to prevent the silent but deadly disease until they can visibly see signs and symptoms – think bad breath, staining of the teeth, plaque build-up and inflamed gums. If left untreated, it can cause pain and discomfort, tooth loss and complications with your pet’s heart, liver and kidneys.
However, there’s one Aussie brand leading the charge to effectively encourage owners to prioritise their furry friends’ dental health from the get-go.
Enter: Bell and Bone.
The pet brand has released a first-of-its-kind Dental Topper Spray for dogs and cats, and in five flavours – Beef, Lamb, Salmon, Tuna and Chicken.

This dental spray has been formulated with super foods and oral actives to help prevent plaque buildup as well as pre, pro and post-biotic compounds to help balance the gut microbiome and encourage good bacteria production.
With aims to promote dental halth, digestion and immunity by reducing inflamation in the gut, the easy-to-use topper is vet-approved and picky eater-approved.
“We were lucky enough to trial this with our rottie Milo and it’s been such a game changer… He’s always had stinky breath but after starting him on this spray it’s all but disappeared, so amazed how by it and love how easy it is to use,” one five-star reviewer wrote.

“THEY CAN’T SPEAK UP”: THE ‘AH-HA’ MOMENT
After forging a successful career in food manufacturing, Arianne Sackville, 36, became entranced by the world of pet health once her dog, Louie, came into the picture.
“In getting him, I was highly invested and still am, in his health and wellbeing so I was choosing the best brands that I could afford to feed him, and naturally, I wanted to give him a good dental stick to chew on,” she told news.com.au checkout.
While the idea had floated around her work experience and love for animals, Arianne says Louie was “her main motivation” as she “wanted to start him off on the right foot”.
Frustrated at the lack of healthy options, the 36-year-old took matters into her own hands and launched Bell and Bone in 2018.

“It just seems so obvious to me that as we brush our teeth daily, our pets need to do something for theirs. So I went into stores, and to be honest, I was actually shocked at how unhealthy the options were from these multinational businesses.
“Dogs are omnivores, so meat should be the first ingredient in all of their food. But what I found was that these sticks were full of wheat, rice, potato, cereals, and not only are they unhealthy, but they’re also really bad for teeth as well.”
Just one-week out from the Melbourne Covid lockdown in March 2020, the Melbourne-based pet brand launched its renowned dental range that quickly became a household essential for many pet owners.
“Everyone was staying at home with their pets and the more time we spent with our pets, we were noticing things about them that we had never noticed before. And one of the main things that people were noticing were problems with their dental health,” she told news.com.au checkout.

“We were really lucky with the timing of that launch and got a lot of attention really, really quickly, which helped build the business. Health was such a big topic at the time because there was so much sickness around the world.
“With Bell and Bone being that healthier, more natural, more effective option than our large multinational commercial competitors, we had a really big advantage at that time, which helped skyrocket the business really quickly in terms of maintaining that growth and keeping owners on the journey with us.”
For Arianne, being present and building relationships is a big part of her role as a business owner, and while the brand lends itself credit as a trusted name in the pet community – Arianne also owes it to them for the success of her business.
The Bell and Bone support community consists of a thriving group of pet owners who are as passionate as she is and support the brand wholeheartedly, as well as many industry professionals like trainers, breeders, groomers and vets.

Plus, they’re vet-recommended too. Picture: Instagram/@bellandbone.
“We’re an authentic brand. I sign my name on the back of every single pack and am very much the face of the brand. I show up every single day to be with our community, to bring fun and joy to owning a pet, and help empower owners to make the best decisions that they can for their dogs and cats – to give them a better life and also to help build a bond and keep their pet around for longer,” she told news.com.au checkout.
“We do a lot of work to be in person with our community as best as we can. So we attend events such as the RSPCA Million Paws Walk – we’re a major sponsor for that and The Dog Lovers Show. I also go and visit our stores, and I have personal relationships with the store managers and staff that work in the stores, and you know, they’re also a really big part of our community and our advocates, because they help educate shoppers.”
“DOGS AND CATS NEEDED A BRAND LIKE BELL AND BONE”: A BRAND WITH PURPOSE
Developed under the ethos of wanting to “empower, educate and support pet owners in their decision-making”, Bell and Bone’s first dental range was catered to adult dogs – which is from six months when their puppy teeth have fallen out. Since then, the Aussie pet brand has released a puppy range – suitable for pups from 10 weeks old and a senior range – suitable for dogs that are seven years old and older, and have been formulated to be softer to chew and easier to digest.
More recently, Bell and Bone have tapped into the feline space and released dental bites for cats. While it may come as a surprise for many, Arianne revealed that cat products were always in the plan.
“The plan for Bell and Bone was always to create cat products. So the word Bell and the name Bell and bone, so cats wear bells and dogs eat bones. So it was always in the plan,” she revealed to news.com.au checkout.

“I felt like our dogs and cats needed a brand like Bell and Bone, and I knew that I had the means to be able to do that. I worked with industry experts from pet nutritionists to vets to food technologists to the best manufacturers in this country to create the products that we do with the latest research available to us, to give our dogs and cats a healthier and happier life through good food.”
Their dental treats come in a range of flavours including salmon, kangaroo, beef, chicken and lamb and is formulated with active ingredients like sodium tripolyphosphate and zinc sulfate; and in the new cat dental bites, they’ve been formulated with zinc, ascophyllum nodosum, vitamin C and cellulose. All of which are ingredients known to fight against plaque and tartar build-up to promote healthy dental hygiene.
“There are over four-million cats as pets in Australia. So there’s a really big number of cats that are suffering from the disease and it can shorten their life, it can hinder their happiness and their lives if we don’t do something about it,” she explained to news.com.au checkout.
“What’s interesting about the cat market compared to dogs is that far less owners will give their cats treats – only 13 per cent of cat owners will give a treat to their cat and the benefits of doing so are similar to dogs, where it can strengthen the bond between the cat and their owner.
Bell and Bone always had cats and cat owners in mind. Picture: Instagram/@bellandbone.
“It’s great for mental stimulation, and also it can have functional benefits like our cat dental bites. So it’s really my job to help owners understand why they should be not only treating their cat because it enhances their life, their mental and physical well being, but also how important it is to take care of their dental care, because it can be the difference between a shorter and a longer life, or a life potentially in pain or a life that is healthy and happy.”
Bell and Bone comes highly-rated on Judge.me – garnering a 4.92-star rating with over 7,000 five-star reviews and many pet owners attesting to their greatness writing:
“Thank you Bell and Bone for making these senior dental chews. I have an almost 13 year old Shi Tzu who struggles to chew through many other dental chews as she has very small teeth. But these chews are amazing for her, made from natural ingredients, softer texture which makes it easier to chew and a taste that she absolutely loves, always wanting more! And this gives me peace of mind knowing she’s getting a healthy dental experience! Love these!”

Another wrote: “My cat loves these so much. Since he’s 10 years old, he wasn’t really interested in the bites at first, but as I started adding them to his daily meals he really started loving them! I’ve started noticing a massive difference in his teeth – they went from brownish yellow to a much brighter colour. (I actually didn’t realise his teeth were that bad until I saw the difference of the before and after) Definitely recommend for anyone who has a cat and doesn’t brush their teeth often!”
Other reviewers say “they’ve made life so much easier” and “made a huge difference” in their pet’s overall dental health.
They’ve also got a line of Collagen Sticks and Healthy Treats formulated with collagen that target joint and mobility, skin, coat and nails, and provide weight and energy support.
Bell and Bone has effectively established itself as a credible brand that dog and cat owners can trust to keep their pets happy and healthy. Their products can be found in all major pet specialty retailers in Australia like Petbarn, Pet Stock, Pet Circle and more.
“WE’RE JUST AT THE BEGINNING”: THE FUTURE OF BELL AND BONE

From making waves with an inclusive range of top-of-the-line dental treats for dogs and cats to releasing Collagen Sticks and a ‘Healthy Treats’ range – Bell and Bone is evidently a brand that’s continuously growing in success and coming up with new ways to promote pet health.
“Last financial year, we grew 40 per cent which was really exciting to see, and we plan on maintaining that growth into this year as well, with next year being even greater than that, with some exciting export opportunities as well as product launches into new categories,”
Arianne told news.com.au checkout.
“So we’re just at the beginning and getting started, but the plan is to be a world class household name for dental care and pets, not just in Australia, but around the world.”
Bell and Bone will release a new product early next year. Picture: Instagram/@bellandbone.
Arianne revealed that Bell and Bone will be tapping into the healthcare category and has plans of releasing a first-of-its-kind dental supplement for dogs and cats early next year.
“We have found that this category is in growth, and people are coming into pet specialty retailers to find options that they can’t find anywhere else for their pets,” she revealed to news.com.au checkout.
“We are currently in development of our next innovation … It’s science-backed and contains a range of dental actives and pre, pro and post-biotics targeting the animals’ gut microbiomes. This is unlike anything the industry has seen before.”
“I am so excited for this to launch, and for Bell & Bone to provide another option to owners wanting to take better care of their pets”.
