Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday wished for outgoing Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s “good health” and acknowledged his service to the country in various capacities, a day after he tendered his resignation from the post.

“He has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India,” PM Modi wrote on social media platform X.

Dhankhar announced that he was stepping down from his post, with two years to go for the end of his five-year tenure, citing health concerns.

His resignation, addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, was with immediate effect amid the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament. Deputy Chairperson Harivansh Singh conducted the proceedings in the Upper House in the first half on Tuesday. Following continued uproar by the Opposition, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm.

Earlier in the day, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that it is “also a fact that there are far deeper reasons for his resignation”. “It also speaks poorly of those who had got him elected as Vice President in the first instance,” said Ramesh in a post on X.

Ramesh said that “in a truly unprecedented move, Shri Jagdeep Dhankar has resigned”. “He has given health reasons for doing so. Those should be respected. But it is also a fact that there are far deeper reasons for his resignation,” the Congress MP added.
