POINTER trial shows impact of lifestyle in Alzheimer’s disease
Two-year study involved more than 2,000 people aged 60 to 79. Benefits were consistent across men and women, ethnic backgrounds and in people carrying the APOE4 gene, a known risk factor for Alzheimer’s.
The two‑year study involved more than 2,000 people aged 60 to 79 and compared a structured program with a self‑guided approach. Both groups improved overall cognitive function, with the structured program delivering stronger gains. Importantly, benefits were consistent across men and women, ethnic backgrounds and in people carrying the APOE4 gene, a known risk factor for Alzheimer’s.
The results build on earlier work from the Finnish FINGER study and highlight the wide‑ranging impact of combining diet, exercise, mental stimulation and regular health checks.
